Should the Celtics go for Hasheem Thabeet since we need a big center?

Depends on the asking price ... not sure what Houston would be looking for in exchange.

I do like Thabeet. Not as a short term answer but he could become a good player with a 1-2 years game experience ... a Sam Dalembert level player.

No thanks.

It isn't talked about much, but, I have a feeling Thabeet is going to end up a worse draft bust than even Kwame Brown.

Houston gave up a fairly valuable asset to acquire Thabeet, Battier's $7.35M expiring contract.

I'm sure Morey values him as a prospect and it should be noted that they also received a 1st round pick. However, I think they would ask for a valuable commodity in return.

They already have a "Glen Davis" in Chuck Hayes and they don't have a need for Bradley.

I don't think we would have the pieces to acquire him unless it were part of a bigger deal that wouldn't appeal to me.

Haven't seen him play much but I don't think he is the type of center we need. We don't just need big but big and nasty! We need an enforcer and I dont' think Thabeet fits that need.

I could see him taking a Darkoish path. He might push Johnson. I'd definitely offer him a minimum contract, or possibly much larger, but only if he'll take Confederate money

That may also suggest that expiring contracts aren't quite as valuable as some people believe.

It might be possible to characterize Hasheem Thabeet as a poor man's DeSagana Diop, but that might be overrating Thabeet.  Would anyone here be excited about acquiring Diop?

If not for Diop's overpriced contract, yes, I'd love to have him.

D.Diop would be a quality backup center for next season. Or a 20 minute a night starting center. Provide a real physical presence and very good defense. Solid rebounder and a strong screen-setter too.

-----------------------------------

D.Diop is a bad comparison for H.Thabeet.

Diop has much more physical strength and toughness + has a more refined defensive skill-set. Provides a real physical presence in the paint while Thabeet is more of a finesse defender at this point in his career and will likely never provide that type of presence inside.

Hasheem Thabeet, on the other hand, has superior quickness and agility and can cover much more ground defensively. He is still learning his trade on that end of the floor so the results are fairly mixed but there is great room for improvement with more experience.

Thabeet is also a much better offensive player than Diop is. He is more similar to a Tyson Chandler or a Sam Dalembert offensively. By that I mean, how effective a finisher they are around the rim + range of plays they are capable of finishing at the basket + how dangerous they are in a pick and roll with their quickness, length and leaping ability.

D.Diop, in terms of offensive ability, is more like a homeless man's Kendrick Perkins. Diop is Perk minus the post game, passing ability and finishing ability around the rim (yes, Perk is a much better finisher than Diop). Plus, with his size at 7-1 300lbs, he is a lane clogger for dribble penetration / cutters. He doesn't move well and is very stagnant offensively. Diop does set excellent screens though.

My last memory of Hasheem was in a game in Memphis right before he got sent down to dleague...it was the first time in a long while when ive felt a player might can't adapt to the rigors and speed of the NBA.After watching him off/on for over a season he didn't appear to be any closer to developing into a servicable player as the first time i saw him play in Memphis.

Honestly, same here. He's not worth anything than a minimum contract, to me, sad as it is for me to say, considering I'm a UConn fan.

I always knew he was going to be a bust. I'm not interested.

We would be better off bringing in a couple of the broken down Przbilla, Gadzuric, etc types for a backup crew than trying to get Thabeet and giving up assets in the process. No thanx for me.
