I'm after the initial shock, and crazy as it might seem, am slightly excited about this news. The Lakers have Odom, Kobe, Gasol, Bynum, etc. They will be fine on offense being coached by a paper bag. Cleveland fans are mostly praising him as a great defensive mind - I'm very excited about what he can do for my team defensively.

Mike Brown's history, combined with this quote by Kobe Bryant would make me very nervous about your train of thought:

Quote
“Ultimately, [Bynum will] have to fall in line because I’m gonna shoot the ball – we all know that,”

No, not really. Kobe just made it clear that he's the leader of this team, which I don't think anyone would dispute. He would have the same attitude if Shaw, Adelman or Jackson was coaching him.

Mike Brown lacks the authoritative voice of success Kobe respects. This endeavor will fail, and fail loudly.

"You've gotta respect a 15-percent 3-point shooter. A guy
like that is always lethal." - Evan 'The God' Turner

So in the span of one month, the Lakers get swept by Dallas and then hire Mike Brown? I'm lovin' it. 8)

Yup, especially since Kobe is "surprised they didn't consult him".

Kobe already said that he was going to leave that decision to management, and the Lakers stated that the coaching decision was "out of the players domain."

Right...Loving the fact that the Celtics won one more game than the Lakers in the post-season.

I just think there were better candidates who had actually been head coaches before.  I know if my team hired Shaw over someone like Brown, Adelman, or Frank, I wouldn't quite understand it.  At some point, he will get his chance, but those guys all have terrific resumes.

Because Kobe always leaves things up to management without complaint....

What sort of offense will Brown use, will he finally allow Ron Artest to breath on that end?

championships are all that matters...neither team got one this year so the year was a failure for both teams...

This is true, while only one of those teams was relatively healthy and gave up. I'll let you decide which was which.  ;D

He's not the least competent Mike Brown in the world.  He's not even the least competent Mike Brown in sports.

Clearly, the Lakers want a coach who can accommodate Kobe Bryant the same way Mike Brown did with LeBron in Cleveland.
"The worst thing that ever happened in sports was sports radio, and the internet is sports radio on steroids with lower IQs.” -- Brian Burke, former Toronto Maple Leafs senior adviser, at the 2013 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference

The Celtics won one more game with injuries, without homecourt, with no drama and a whole lot of dignity. At the end of the day both teams lost but really there's no comparison. There's tough, disappointing playoff exits that hurt. Then there's point and laugh, trainwreck flaming out of the playoffs exits that really hurt. Everyone can enjoy those even people whose teams are out of the playoffs too.

As for Mike Brown. I think he's an excellent defensive coach and would love to have him as an assistant here but as a head coach I'm not sold. I did think he'd coach again somewhere but not on a contender. Interesting choice.
Tommy: He's got a line about me. Tell him the line.

Mike: Everybody 60 or over knows Tommy as a player. Everybody 40 or over knows Tommy as a coach. Everybody 20 or over knows Tommy as a broadcaster. And everybody 10 or under thinks he's Shrek.

Initially, I was surprised but as I thought more about it....

I don't think it will be too bad. If Doc Rivers, who was an awful defensive coach before Thibs came along, be the head of a competent defensive team - than why can't the converse be true for Mike Brown? Get him a top quality offensive assistant and he'll be fine.

Secondly, for all of Mike Brown's lack of offensive IQ, FWIW, he never had any personnel to do anything with. The Cavs second best offensive player was Mo Williams.

Mo Williams.

What kind of offense are you going to design around that other than run the whole thing through LeBron?

This won't be as bad as people think.

Defensive Improvement? With Gasol/Bynum/Odom?

That is a tough mix to overcome. I'm not sure if there is a better Big combo in the league.

They may be slow, but no one's perfect. I expect them to be better next year.

But so will OKC, DAL and MEM. And LA will have to regain their swag that they've lost. No one is afraid of them anymore.

"Kobe on board with hiring of Brown, has great respect for him, according to sources. Lakers will announce Brown hiring this afternoon."

The offense will not be a problem with the firepower that the Lakers have...There will be assistant coaches for that.
