Playing basketball at the YMCA here in Hartford, I destroyed my left knee after I blocked a shot. I blocked this kids shot, and when I was coming down he made contact with my knee, causing it to be unstable on landing, dislocating the knee and tearing the ACL. Never felt such pain in my life. The worst part of the story is that after getting it checked out by an orthopedic and without health insurance at the time, I opted against the surgery. He warned me of the struggles that I would encounter further down the road. It took me 6 months to be able to get about 75% full range of motion back in my knee and 2 years for me to be able to have a normal stride that would allow me to run, in a straight line of course, being that I have zero lateral movement in my left knee and that it shifts out of place with quick turns and locks up with quad stretching.
After a few years of dealing with it and working out my quads to strengthen the quad muscles for added support, I felt, what seemed at the time 100%, knowing my limitations, but feeling I could do almost everything I used to. Went to Jim Evans professional umpiring school and while I was down there, felt the knee buckle, twist oddly, and lock up out of place. Again, dislocated.
it has been 7 years since my last dislocation, but I do still have a great deal of maintenance to do with it. I do still umpire and luckily have not suffered anything to bad with that knee.
I feel all your pain! We are quite the M.A.S.H. unit.
