I hate to admit it, but the bloom is off the Rondo for me.

my uneducated butt isnt familiar with that term but if it means your not feelin rondo at all lately then i agree completely!

Ha!  You sent me to the Oxford English Dictionary to find the first reported use in this sense (James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, back in the 18th century), but the usual phrase is that the 'bloom is off the rose'.

I meant it as a bit of a pun, since it means something that once had appeal has now  lost its allure, and that would apply now to Rondo, rather than Rose.

Sort of a thorny issue here.

Cornbread Maxwell should talk to Rondo about being traded out of Boston.

It won't happen until the NBA has a buyer for the Hornets.  No way the league is trading the team's franchise player on their behalf

And I'm sure whoever that buyer is will be willing to trade the team's franchise player for a guy who can't shoot.  ::)

I like CP3, but wow...

Honestly, I hope Rondo blows up in the playoffs so we can move him. Too many flaws that are not going to be fixed.

He's a very, very good point guard, but NOT a franchise player. You can't build around him. In fact, my biggest question is "how are we going to get a true franchise player" once we blow everything up?

Face it, the list of guys who can lead your team to a championship is very, very small. Let's not forget that most of them already happen to be committed to teams.

Franchise players that might, MAYBE move in the near future:
Blake Griffin
Chris Paul
Dwight Howard
? Maybe I'm forgetting somebody

If we don't snag one of those players in the next couple of years, it's time to tank a season to get the #1 pick.

Sadly, you've hit the nail on the head.

Unless we can get a premiere star, we ought to just get as bad as possible as quickly as possible and hope for luck with draft picks for a few years.

It's worth pointing out that your list of players that can lead you to a title is comprised entirely of players who have never done that.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Paul is great because the Hornets can hold onto Rondo for a loooong time because of his locked in contract.
He would be awesome at luring Dwight Howard here.

I hadn't seen this topic and made a similar one saying that CP3 would be excellent trade bait for Dwight- good article on Bleacher Report about it.

A lot of people are really not giving CP3 and Howard enough credit for wanting to be winners or labeling them as Hollywood wannabes who care about the spotlight rather than winning rings.
Putting Dwight and Chris Paul in green culture would change their attitudes significantly- especially if Doc was coach still.
If you could get Howard and Paul into that locker room with KG, Pierce and Garnett the NBA would be shut down by the Celtics for at least 3 more years.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett had never done it prior to doing so.  I'm not sure what your point is.

Almost always, winning a title requires a superstar who can carry a team and win a series almost single-handed.  Those are the superstars who will realistically be available in the next few years (although I think Blake is staying with the Clippers).  If the Celtics want to seriously contend post-Big 3, they will need to try to get one of them, or hope that they are lucky enough to draft another.

Rondo's carried a team through as many playoff series as Chris Paul. Not that I'm comparing the two, but if KG hadn't been injured in 2009 then that list would be comprised of a rookie who's team is only a few games better than last year and two players who hadn't led their teams past any quality team in the playoffs in 5 or so years in the league.

Without the Big 3, Rondo isn't carrying a team past anybody.

Dwight Howard is the difference between the Magic being a punch line and being a borderline championship contender.

Blake Griffin isn't yet at the point where he's carrying teams to the playoffs, but if he gets even a semi decent team around him with good coaching and continues to mature / improve, he'll be doing it very soon.

Chris Paul could carry a team through post-season series with only decent help around him.  He can dish like Rondo and be the focal point of the offense at the same time.  Chris Paul can do it all.
