Thanks to all of you for your prayers and well-wishes. I know they helped him pull through this.
Sorry I haven't given an update since last week. Blackberry's are not the easiest method for long messages.
Here is what happened to him.
He was training with the marines near Fort Bragg last Monday. As you saw from the news link, the shell went off inside the bore and injured 10 men. 2(one being my nephew John) were the most severely injured and by all accounts, should not be alive today. I met two of the three guys who worked on him right after the explosion. Had it not been for their quick work, he would have bled out. The Dr. said that if they had not been as close to the base as they were, he never would have made it. Most of the time, John is not close to civilization when training.
Both his legs were broken and he was filled with shrapnel. One of the main injuries was to his left thigh where he lost some of the artery. Thankfully they were able to use a vein from another part his body to keep the blood flowing and leg from going dead. He did have a setback yesterday however and they had to perform surgery on that artery again. He does have a pulse in his leg and it seems that its(hopefully) going to hold up. The Dr. said yesterday that either "God gave him new veins or real good ones". They Dr. was amazed that the blood is flowing through the leg as good as it is. They had thought they were going to have to amputate it yesterday morning.
John is doing much better, but still has a long way to go. He has a piece of shrapnel near his heart and he will have to have surgery to remove it in the coming days. Once this is taken out, I don't believe they will have to open him up again. He should be able to go ahead without anymore setbacks.
He is in good spirits and does understand the extent of his injuries. He's been cracking jokes since he woke up and thanks God for helping him pull through this. He understands that everything happens for a reason and is not angry about his present circumstances. I believe he will use this for a greater good.
I want to thank you all again, it's times like this that show what a great group of people we have on this blog.
