Shouldn't the comparison be Shaq v. Perk and not Perk v. Krstic?

Krstic was brought in to be a backup center, not starter.  Perk is being replaced by Shaq, not Krstic.  I think either O'Neal if healthy would start over Krstic.  So people have been comparing a backup center to a starting center.

Shaq v. Perk is the real deal here and I take Shaq 10 times out of 10 and twice on Sunday.

I know, I know, it's the "what if Shaq isn't healthy?"  Well, "what if Perk isn't healthy?"

I think Ainge's concern was that Perk might not be healthy enough to help in the playoffs.  He did get hurt both times the Celtics went to the Finals.

I agree, I'd take Shaq, too. He commands way too much attention on the court, you can't ignore him out there, that's good for us. He can still out-muscle every single center in the league and from recent pictures, he looks to be in amazing shape.

I think most of the Shaq injury thing is just to keep him fresh. I fully expect him to be ready to contribute come the playoffs.

Of course, we could've had both. Just saying. ;)

Danny said repeatedly after the trade that he thought Shaq deserved and needed to start.

Perk said repeatedly before the trade that he was going to come back as the starter, no question about it.

If that's true, we really couldn't have had both and keep both guys happy.  Perk would not be happy to be benched behind Shaq.

Doc was saying the same thing Perk was FWIW.

Don't you think that Danny's take was post-trade spin?  All year long, Doc reiterated that Perk was the starter.  We never got to see a rotation where Shaq backed up Perk, but there's no reason to believe that it wouldn't work.  Shaq was a good soldier all year long.

It's not like we're talking about a couple of 40 minute per game guys here.  Regardless of whether we're talking about Shaq or Perk or Krstic, they're going to be in the 20 - 25 minute range in the playoffs.  Therefore, you have to consider the center rotation as a unit, versus as individual parts.

Thus, the argument becomes not Perk vs. Krstic, or Shaq vs. Perk, but rather Perk/Shaq/JO vs. Shaq/Krstic/JO.  In that instance, I prefer the prior group.  That group sacrifices some offense, but improves the defense and defensive rebounding.  I think the latter skills are more important in the playoffs, but reasonable minds can disagree, I suppose.

Of course, the trade can't fairly be evaluated solely by looking at the centers.  However, if people want to view it through only that prism, then I feel pretty confident in saying that we downgraded.

Also, to clarify the above, I understand that Perk is currently injured.  I expect him to be as good or better than he was in his 12 game stint, when he put up pretty good numbers (especially rebounding).

it's not really a "what if" on Shaq's health though - there is no reason to believe that he is going to be ready to go for the 16-28 game stretch this year

Well has Shaq ever missed a playoff game?

He only played 53 regular season games last year and then played all 11 playoff games at 22 minutes per a game.

I think that is certainly enough to believe that Shaq is going to ready.

Not to mention if Shaq really wasn't healthy why would Danny trade away Perk knowing that he isn't going to be healthy?

Let's be realistic Shaq has taken time off in just about every season he has been in the league. As he's gotten older he has been taking more and more time off and I'm all for it.

If Shaq doesn't come back from this "injury" I think it will be a shock to Danny, Doc and Shaq himself.

I still think this is a pointless exercise.  Basketball is not played one on one.  There are a lot of other guys on the court, and there have been a lot of significant changes to this team other than losing Perk.

To me, the only relevant question is, overall, is this team better on April 15th, than it was on February 15th (or whatever day was before the deadline)?

Personally, I think it is, but we won't know until we see how everything comes together over the next month.

Shaq's injury has 2009 KG written all over it.  Shaq was supposed to be in the lineup against Milwaukee or something last week if you recall, then all of a sudden he is out INDEFINITELY...The exact same thing as KG.

They guaranteed us he would be ready for the playoffs until days before, then all of a sudden he was going to miss the entire year.  This isn't good....at all

Sorry, I don't agree. Shaq is 39 and a massive man. The more time he spends on his rear instead of his bum achilles, creaky knees and middle aged hips the better. I'm sure he is ailing a bit, as I am sure many players on our team are banged up and playing through it. But the more time he has to rest, the better the chances of him making it through the playoffs and hopefully playing as well as he did for the first third of the season. Cleveland did this with him as well.

I'd take Perk over Shaq.  At least Perk can rotate defensively and actually stay in the game.  Shaq can't even move on defense without fouling.  Shaq might start games but he can never play starters minutes.
