Always has been ... but KG has been right behind him since he came. The beauty is, they each respect each other and defer to each other when it comes to taking the "spotlight", but even KG knows when it comes to crunch time, "Get Paul the ball and get out of the way!" He is one of the greatest "clutch" players of all time, and in my opinion, will never get the credit he deserves.

That's why I was so incredibly pleased when he got the Finals MVP award ... it was about time! He was the only thing that kept me watching the Celtics for a number of years, and those of us that were around for the "Lean Years", know what a difficult job he had. It bugged some people when he started talking about being traded, but that was only because he was tired of carrying a mediocre team with no prospect of a Championship.

The KG/Ray trades were the result, and we owe him for that, too.

KG behind Pierce? Only through long-time homer eyes.
I think Pierce has been our best player since KG got hurt in 09.  It might seem like he doesn't do as much as KG since a lot of the offense goes through Rondo now, but he's still our first option.  Between his passing, slashing, shooting, ability to create his own shot or get to the line, leadership, rebounding, high efficiency, ability to still carry the team when he's hot, and most importantly his ability to come up big in the clutch I think he's still a top 10ish player.

This year KG has probably caught back up to him but I couldn't say for sure that he's still our best player.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Looked intimidated when matched against howard in last years playoffs. Most people dont want to hear this but it was garnett's choke job that cost the celtics in game 7 last year. Unnessary fouls, fumbled rebounds, blown rotations. His lingering in the backcourt after a celtics made 3 screwed up the matchups and pitted rondo against odom/gasol while garnett was guarding fisher on the perimeter. you know what happened, rondo was outjumped by gasol and the game was lost.

For a man with the glazed eyes of a serial killer, who screams and shouts a lot, he doesn't deliver the knockout punch where it counts. How about him being genuinely fearless, like a Rocky Balboa? It's almost like the excess emotions are there to motivate himself. People are beginning to see that it's just histrionics.

That's why Pierce is my number one. He's generally calm, cool, and collected at most times, however, give him some rest and a healthy body and he's unstoppable! But again, he can't defend all spots & zones like KG so it's not like we can have one and not the other.

Well, you're certainly entitled to your opinion ... frankly, KG honestly feels that Pierce is a better player than he is, (as do many of their team-mates), and I'll take his authority over yours. Don't appreciate the name-calling ... at all. I've never spoken to you in a disrespectful way, and I appreciate the same in return.

Garnett is a fairly superior player to Pierce.

The Celtics team concept is so good that we don't even need to worry about who is better.  I don't see anyone playing for stats.  If you were forced to come up with best player, take rondo, kg and PP flip a coin.

Pierce has always been the Celtics best player.  Nothing has changed, imo. 8)

Only certain boston 'fans' are starting to see that, fyi.  Unbelievable... err not really.

All four are equally important but, Boston has No, NONE, 0% chance of winning without KG or Rondo.  Pierce will always be my favorite player though and the most clutch of the bunch.

"Honestly, it sounds diplomatic, but I have a hard time putting any of the Big 4 above the rest.  Some are less consistent than others (*cough*Rondo!*cough*) but they each play such a huge, distinct role in making our team what it is that it's hard to identify a clear #1."

fairweather, I agree with this.  I live out in chicago so I hear over and over about rondo, they hate and love rondo out here, I hear about kg, mostly how old he is, while they over-estimate his offense and still underestimate his defense (they think noah is as good, and I love noah, and he is probably second best at what they do but he is still no kg, just doesnt have that crazy length), and I hear about ray allen, who they all think is our best offensive player.  PP is slow and old and fat.  They honestly aren't afraid of pp

Cue yoda voice - you will be, you will be.

Rondo is a freak, never seen a pg do the things he does off the ball, reminds me of scottie pippin in the way he can change games with his physical presence without the ball, and that is coming from the pg, who, like it or not, is generally a defensive/physical liability position.

Allen is our best shooter, he opens our offense, he manages, defensively, but every once in awhile he starts thinking he is a pg, dribbles around in circles and throws the ball to the other team.  drives me nuts, isn't this obvious to everyone on the team?  he just shouldn't be allowed to do that if there is any choice at all, shoot, dribble shoot, or get to the hole, no circle dribbbling, please.

KG might be our best player, what he does on D makes us who we are and nobody else in the league does what he does, its possible nobody else can, but his offense is way over rated, we have to beg him to work his man down low, and we can count on what 3,4,5, shoulda shot but pass and turned it over moments.

KG is only our best player if you are stubborn and old, and insist on defense (and doesn't it feel good to feel tough and old school hard nosed) because in the end, the guy that can create his own shot and force the opposing team to double, still score, pass, and not turn the ball over, those guys are rare, guys with the inside outside game of pp are rare, guys with the low post game of pp are rare, and remember all those weird seal plays off inbounds passes and when he seems alone or with his man on his back right by the basket, that is low post play too, he just did the work before the ball got there and to our eye, watching the ball, all of the sudden he is open underneath.

Now, to me (and jeff van gundy), to me, there are only two guys in the game with that game (and he is a really good defender right now), and the list is Kobe, and Melo, and Pierce, and that is it.  LeBron still has no post game as great as much of the other stuff he does is, and Dwade is too small, even when he does post up it is too easy to give him hide-the-sky double teams.  Pierce is our best player because what he can do is so valuable and so rare.  I mean I didn't even mention the other stuff, the size (for years when he played the 2 I called him the barkley of gaurds), the making plays for others, the willingness to sit back and let the other guys go nuts, the shooting touch (ray is better, but not by much), etc...

I definitely don't think we have a 0% of winning without Rondo.  Shaq, KG, Paul, and Ray are good enough to still win with Delonte.  They would just have to hit slightly harder shots.

Just look at the c's before KG and since KG.

I don't disagree with people thinking KG is better or more valuable. It is close imo.

But this line of reasoning always falls short. Before KG arrived with Ray, Posey and basically Pierce as he missed half the season 06-07 season with the stress fracture.

People always say things like the above quote and then you have to ask, well how good were the Twolves when KG was there without help?

Both teams had the same garbage roster, infact I would say Boston's was worse. The instant PP got hurt they lost 19 in a row. I believe the Celts were 20 adn 24 with PP and 4 - 34 without him.

Also, people seem to conveniently forget that KGs Twolves teams were almost always middle of the pack defensive teams. If KG single handedly can lock down the world, as I am so often lead to believe, how could that be.

PP and KG are great compliments to each other and I feel like you can really see how much they like each other and enjoy playing with each other. They NEEDED each other, neither was going to do it own their own and I think they are far and away the two most important players on this incarnation of the celtics.

Who cares who is "better"

That being said they are both a clear notch above rondo at this point. ha

Really the delonte that's played like 2 games this year causing us to have to pick up another player because he can't even be trusted to stay healthy enough to be Rondo's backup.  Sure I like Delonte there just is no counting on him.  So I still 0%.
