The Lakers were expected to sweep the New Orleans Hornets.  It was supposed to be a huge mismatch, literally. The Lakers have too much size, too much length, and a championship pedigree. The Hornets backed their way into the playoffs and are without their leading scorer in all-star, David West.  But if this is the matchup the Lakers really wanted, they had better be more careful of what they wish for.  New Orleans' game one victory can no longer be considered a fluke and Chris Paul was not a one hit wonder as he led his underdog Hornets to a 93-88 victory.

Kobe expressed that the outcome was based on the performances of Gasol and Bynum, claiming that on some occasions when he only takes ten shots they don't always have big games and that when he takes 30 shots they sometimes respond with big games.

Kobe appeared to be on the defensive, claiming "It had nothing to do with my shots".

Now the Lakers must face the daunting task of having to win four of five games, and two of three in Dallas if they are going to advance to the Western Conference Finals.  Only three teams in the history of the NBA have ever come back to win a series after losing the first two games at home.  The last time the Lakers lost the first two games of a playoff series was the 2008 NBA finals, which resulted in their ninth NBA Finals loss to the Boston Celtics.

The Black Mamba and Zen Master could do nothing to stop the Mavericks from taking a commanding 3-0 series lead and now the Lakers face a task which has been impossible up to this point.  In the history of the NBA 98 teams have fallen behind 0-3 in a playoff series and all 98 have failed to come back to win the series.  If the Lakers were to pull it off, they would indeed make history.

The Lakers stay stuck on 16 titles, still one short of tying the Boston Celtics' league leading 17 championships.  Kobe Bryant remains stuck on 5 rings, one behind Michael Jordan.  And the Laker franchise will be searching for answers along with a new coach.

Derek Fisher may have played his last game, at least as the Lakers' starting point guard.  Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum, both having their seasons end with an ejection, will most likely be part of trade rumors or trade talks for Dwight Howard, and could have conceivably played their last games as Lakers as well.

In retrospect the Buss family's decision not to trade Odom and Bynum for Carmelo Anthony must now be considered a huge mistake that may have cost the franchise years of championship contention.
