I generally laugh at fans that want to trade garbage (e.g., Bradley, Luke, Erden, etc.) for quality (e.g., Battier, Dudley, etc.).  The reality that most fans don't understand is that you have to give up something of value to get something of value.  I hated to see Perkins go but the reality was, we needed to sign a wing.  Absolutely needed to or else.

So we gave up value.  A guy that provided toughness and defense but was hugely limited in a lot of ways.  He was a decent not great rebounder and pretty awful offensive player.

But more than that, I was thinking a lot about Perkins a few weeks ago when I heard that he rejected a deal (lowball as it was).  Were we actually going to pay Perkins big money and long years to take us into the post Big 3 era?  Could we afford to do that?  The resounding answer in my mind a few weeks ago was a resounding NO.

Perkins should not be one of the top paid players on any team.  He is too limited in what he can do and frankly, was being sheltered by the Big 4.  Perk is not a horrible player; and I absolutely love his toughness and attitude.  But he is what he is; a guy that in his career has averaged about 6 points and 6 rebounds.

They could have gotten a quality 4th swing man.

The names you put up are quality starting swing men.

There is a difference.

We gave up something we didn't even have all year.

In return we fill major gaps that we would have had if we had kept Perkins in street clothes at the end of the bench.

This trade isn't a homerun, but it's definitely and without question a very very good thing for this team.  This year, and in the future.

Erden and Luke brought a 2nd round pick.  That is what they were worth.  What was a 4th swing man going to do for this team?  I would have settled for Anthony Parker but as yuo saw, our guys weren't even worth that much.

And yes, Battier and Dudley are starter types but so is Green.  And on top of that, Green is more talented than those two.

Actually, it is like a low end 1st round pick, since it belongs to Cleveland, who likely will be bottom feeders for the foreseeable. So I have no qualms with what we got for them.

I think Erden might have been worth a late first-round pick, but that became a second round pick (but a likely early second pick that has almost as much value because it doesn't come with a guaranteed contract) in order to get the other team to take on Harangody's small contract that is guaranteed through next year.
