Celtics Offered Perkins Contract

While Kendrick Perkins was rehabilitating his injury, earlier this season, the Celtics offered him a 4 year 28 million dollar contract. Perkins turned it down. So by Perk turning down that contract, he set this trade up today. I hate to see him go, but you have to admit, the Celtics did have to trade him.

I think it was 4 years 23 million...not 28. And we weren't trying to low ball him. We offered him the qualifying offer under the CBA.

it's clearly the reason he was traded. By doing this trade the C's can retain Green for 1 more year than Perk allowing them to resign Green under the new CBA, which will most likely save them money, under the new CBA Boston may be available to sign green to the 30 mil contract that Perk passed up .

It also sets them up nicely to take a run at Dwight in 2012

Honestly, I think Marquis Daniels going down with that severe injury led to all this madness.

Had 'Quis been fine, I think we roll into the playoffs with the roster we had on opening night.

Agreed. We couldn't offer more under the rules, and that was under-market. The only reason Danny dealt Perk was that he didn't think it was probable that we could sign Perk for a fair contract this summer - somebody was going to throw a bad contract at him (like a 4/40 deal). I think that was highly likely, and Perk would be a fool not to accept that. I love Perk and what he meant to the team, but a one-dimensional (granted, he's quite good at D) center who isn't a rebounding machine should not get more than a 4/30 deal, especially in light of the almost-certain tightening of the cap in the new CBA coming up next year. Was it worth risking a title this year for this? I'm not sure...I remember how bad the 90's were...and I'm not sure Perk alone wins us a title. I mean, we were pretty dominant with Shaq and others at center for us most of the season. My thinking is, if Shaq and JO and Marquis all were injured, we weren't winning a title no matter what. It's the health of the team overall that matters. If Shaq/JO stay hurt, we weren't gonna win, even with Perk at 100% (which he wasn't going to be, anyway).

If Marquis Daniels had not turned into Gilbert Arenas's chest the way he did...would Boston have detonated the roster like this?

I think this is an intelligent move.

Jeff Green can guard both forward spots, and is a great piece to have next to Rajon Rondo. Nenad Krstic is going to be a FA this summer so he's probably out of here after this season. That Clippers pick in '12 is also a huge deal.

I think Doc can win this year anyways. The Celtics have the best record in the East without Perkins. If Troy Murphy comes here (which I'd bet on) he's an elite level rebounder with a nice shooting touch. Perkins did a great job guarding Dwight Howard but lets remember that it's Kevin Garnett who is the anchor of this defense, hell they're 6-1 with Semih as the starter.

I don't know about that; Cs will need a Center -- how much can we offer him if his gets $5.8M this year?  Is he coming off a 2 or a 3 year contract (I'm thinking of Bird rights here?).  We all have a lot of homework to do to understand the ramifications of these trades!
