I went tolerate - dogs are too needy
Love dogs but this is true.  Cats are cooler.  They make you work for their affection.  Dogs just give it away.
To quote a comedian

Everyone loves dogs because they're dumb. You're like "cmere dog" and they run right over to you.

You say "cmere cat" and it looks at you weird, starts to walk away from you, then turns around and gives you the finger"

I said it before, and I'll say it again...

Dogs are better than people.

I like to use this test: Throw your dog in the trunk of a car for an hour... Then come and get him. What do you think his reaction will be when he sees you? He'll be excited, jump on you and lick you like crazy out of love.

Now try the same experiment with your girlfriend and see what she does...
Hold on.

I'll be back in an hour
Oh wow. That went worse than you could possibly imagine.

Think that's bad, try locking your girlfriend in the trunk and then your wife borrows the car.   ;D

I love dogs myself though.  Grew up with Huskies, who are beautiful but shed waaaaaay too much to get one now.  Fiancee currently has what we think is a black lab/American shepherd mix (it was a found dog).  He's pretty awesome too, although a bit neurotic.

EDIT - he also fights crime on the weekends:

The most entertaining and fun pet I was ever around was a feret. But it smelled worse than a dump. Granted I know some dogs that smell. And some people
Just this week a pet ferret chewed the fingers and toes off a baby while it was sleeping.  Wild animals, no matter how cute, are not safe around babies.  Even dogs and cats should be monitored carefully.

That said, I have had both cats and dogs for most of my life.  I have had Yorkshire Terriers since I got married...my present Yorkie, Samson, is 13.  Love both cats and dogs.  Yorkies are easier than cats (no shedding).

The baby didn't start screaming alerting the parents?

I wasn't there, EJ, I don't know!  But it was reported on the Ch. 9 news station here that the baby was rushed to the hospital.  I did not make the story  up.  I used to have a friend with a pet ferret...no kids though...

I am getting an English Bulldog puppy later this year.

I was going to name him/her either Miss Piggy, Rondo, Garnett, or Pierce.

I am the current only 'dislike' vote and I only didn't say 'hate' because hate is too strong a word to use in this context. But, I really have absolutely no interest in them generally, and when I go to someone's home who has one, I typically try to avoid any contact.  Usually I have to do the obligatory let him sniff or jump on me and then have to pat him and then occasionally steer him away from me.  I don't like anything about it; I don't like to be licked or jumped on or sniffed, I don't like repetitive 'fetch' games where I need to touch saliva covered objects.  I usually feel the desire to wash after petting them.  Not meaning any offense to dog lovers -- I respect your dog-love and wish I found joy in what you obviously find joy in.

I was attacked by dogs at age 2 and had a scar below my eye for most of my life (unfortunately relative old age has basically erased it.....loss of character, etc..)

Anway, I may be guilty of loving dogs too much.  For example, I'm afraid to see that movie with Richard Gere based on a true story because I'm afraid I'll end up balling.  Once I've made a connection with a dog I can't stand to separate from it....and if a dog ever bites me again I'll very quickly make up a good excuse for it having done so.  As you can see, my dog love has gone too far.

I love dogs ... and cats ... and pretty much every animal that exists. However, I strongly believe that wild animals should remain wild, and zoos, circuses, animal parks and anything else that keeps animals from living in their natural state and environment, (yes, I know the "zoos help educate people" argument), anger and depress me, and I believe are wrong, (except in cases of rehabilitation).
