I'm not sure Mitch would, but I would. Yah, I know he's the face of the franchise, and yah, I know the old maxim that the team who gets the best player, gets the best deal, but there are many reasons I do this.
1. Kobe is 32, prime time, right? (or just starting the downside). It could be and has been argued that his selfish play this season is a big part of the Fakers woes. It also has been and could be argued that Gasol's value to the team is as significant as Kobe. I like Gasol's next five years better than I like Kobe's.
2. His value to a wannabe team is huge. Fakers get excellent young team players in return and maybe draft picks. Fakers can rebuild on the fly and still be competitive now.
3. His value, both trade wise and production wise for the Fakers only gets worse next year and the year after.
The main problems in trading him are 3: in PR (he is the face of the franchise), giving up the best player and his right to approve any trade. That's why the Knicks are the best place to trade him for three reasons:1. the market is the only one to rival and perhaps exceed LA, and probably the only one he would accept, and with him, they would be challengers for the title, 2. the knicks have excellent young pieces to give the Fakers and 3. the Knicks (like every arrogant, impetuous New York team), would give ANYTHING to win NOW, and with Kobe, they would be challengers marginally now and have a three to four year window to win.
This trade works
http://basketball.realgm.com/tradechecker/saved_trade/5830422 and I think would be good for both franchises.
NYK get Kobe, Fisher and Barnes
Fakers get: Curry (big expiring, big $$$ flexibility and savings), Felton, Gallinari, Chandler and Fields, all young talented , reasonable contracts who can produce now and have big upside. (If the knicks don't want to give up Chandler, Randolph can be substituted, but Fakers unlikely to do this because Randolph's stock has dropped.
