Here's a list of guys that are being cut so teams can save money...

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/05/teams-cut-players-at-rapid-rate-as-contract-deadline-approaches/

Quote
Brian Skinner and John Lucas III in Milwaukee, Ronald Dupree in Toronto, Ime Udoka in San Antonio, Damien Wilkins in Atlanta, Rodney Carney in Golden State, Steve Novak in Dallas, and Mike Harris in Houston all let go… and that’s just in the last few hours. There have been and will be more.

are any of them an upgrade on Wafer?  if so, it makes sense to cut Wafer and make a run at one of them

otherwise, a bird in the hand...

I like Wilkins and Carney of the list but not really more than Wafer.  He is just starting to play well and get an opportunity so I'd keep him around.

Also, he's only 25.

I'd keep Wafer at this point.

The only way I can see them letting him go is if they want to keep an open roster spot, and go after a buyout or Rasheed later.  However, I'd be inclined to stick with Wafer, especially since he's contributing now.

Rodney Carney is the only quality player amongst that group of waived players. He could be a rotation player for someone who needs a defensive stopper at the two.

Ime Udoka is also a borderline NBA talent. A serviceable 14th/15th man.

The rest of those players aren't good enough to be in the NBA (John Lucas, Dupree, D.Wilkins, M.Harris).

Surprised Novak is on that list.

Granted, a bit of a one-trick pony. But lots of teams could use a stretch 4, and a cheap one at that. And it's not like Cuban couldn't afford to pay Novak's guaranteed salary.

No one who's that impressive is on that list. I say stick it out with Wafer at this point, maybe he can build on his recent successes and become a rotation player for the regular season.

in the "its not my money" department, I'd like to wait and see who else becomes available down the line - we can still cut him if we want (and I'm not much of a fan) but you guys are right, there isn't a real good alternative out there right now

Von has bought himself at least until Delonte comes back with his play in the last couple games.  There is no one on the market who is good enough to make it worthwhile to start over, and have them learn the system.  Wafer knows the system now, and is therefore more valuable at this point.

Once West comes back, and teams start looking at buying out legitimate players however (rather than cutting the bottom of their roster), then they can look at either cutting Wafer, or trading him for air (like they did with POB), in order to save some of the cash.

But for now, he is not going anywhere, because frankly, they need him.

lol, everyone here is underrated Wafer... it is getting ridiculous. The kid can score and create, and if given the opportunity, he can produce... just wait & see

I like how Wafer is starting to play.  He's an atheletic guy who has shown he can shoot.  While his shot is coming around he is also very quick and can drive to the hoop.  I'd keep wafer over all those guys.  I once was in the Carney camp but I think he's overrated and hasn't really shown much.

Wafer is just getting his confidence, and if he starts playing at the level he played in Houston, he's worth a lot to this team. I have really liked him in the past couple of games, he really stood out. So no, we do not waive him. Cut Rajon Rondo, maybe?

  • Another undersized Celtic...
If we waive him, someone else will just scoop him up. Why worry about a roster spot if the guys that are out there aren't worth signing now? If we make an addition, it would probably be through a minor trade of some sort, no? Wouldn't Wafer be a decent, low cost chip to hold on to, especially while he can help us in the meantime?

Cut Rondo  ??? :o

Von Wafer has played better than I expected but we need another point more than we need him--he should be cut and the spot held open until the injury situation becomes clearer--I like Von Wafer but we can do better!

for the cost of him and his play the last 3 games we can't cut him

last game he played really well, if he kept playing at that level wow do we have a deep team, he's somewhere huddled with the last 3 guys on bench, bradley, luke and wafer-any quality minutes we can get out of one of those guys is a major plus
how deep is this team!

I believe they can still cut him later in the year, they would just have to pay thr full years salary. Is that correct?
I would keep him around at least until West gets back and see if he keeps improving. If he keeps getting better, who knows, maybe you keep him and West. That might be a better back up back court than Robinson and West. Might as well see how it plays out over the next 3-4 weeks.
