I was looking at our team salary at hoopshype.com and it has Wallace's salary for this and next year.  Does his salary count against our cap?  If so, how and why?

Thanks,

Smitty77

P.S. I hope that everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!!

Hoopshype isn't the best site for salary data.  Shamsports.com is very good, and probably the best resource is this site:

Regarding Rasheed's salary, we know that he agreed to a buyout (rather than officially retiring), but I never saw a media report saying the amount of that buyout.  I think it's widely assumed that the Celtics walked away owing Rasheed nothing (much like Derek Fisher's buyout with Utah), but let's say (for hypothetical purposes only) that they decided to pay him $2 million.  In that case, we'd owe $1 million this year, and $1 million next year against our cap.

What if we bring him back later in the season?  Does he get the one mill plus whatever salary for this season?

I actually think there's a good chance this happens.  He's been hanging out with the team, and there are no guarantees that Perk will produce anything when he comes back.

Any new salary wouldn't be affected by the buyout amount, whether that's $0, $1 million, or $5 million.  A new contract would be treated as a totally separate thing (with us only able to pay Rasheed a pro-rated share of the veteran's minimum, as we lost any Bird / early-Bird rights when we bought him out).

Do we know that he didn't officially retire?  Because the only place I have read that is in speculation on this site.  Has anyone reported that he didn't file the paperwork?

I think the report was that he agreed to a buyout, and there was nothing further regarding retirement reported.  I think that between the buyout (which would have been unnecessary if Rasheed retired) + some of the player comments about Rasheed potentially coming back + no report of official retirement papers, we can make an educated guess that there was no formal retirement.

Well, I think a buyout would be necessary for the retirement, if they agreed on paying him less than his full salary.  It is part of the process for a player in Sheed's position to retire to work out a buyout with the team.

But you are right, the educated guess based on what we know would be that he didn't file the papers.  But I just didn't think that had actually been confirmed by anyone, it is just speculation.
