The Phoenix Suns, with starting center Robin Lopez out for a few weeks (knee strain), signed journeyman Earl Barron today. Terms were not available at this point, but I'm guessing it will be a 10-day.

Celtics fans may remember Barron going for 17/18 in a loss to the Knicks last April.

Also, C's summer league guard Matt Janning was released. The 6'4" former Northeastern combo guard had been signed to a 2-yr partially guaranteed contract.  Personally, I like him better than Wafer...

From the Az Republic:

"It might be encouraging for Suns fans to think about how the team's new 7-foot acquisition, Earl Barron, played so well last season in a New York system that coach Mike D'Antoni first constructed in Phoenix and where most of it remains.

But for those fans of a team with a last-place ranking in defensive rebounding and a starting center, Robin Lopez, out for about a month, Barron could not have offered any more encouraging words than he did Tuesday upon signing with the Suns and joining their trip to Miami for tonight's game.

"It's most important that I get rebounds and help on defense, and all the offense will come second nature," Barron said.

Ahh, rebounds from someone who does not play a wing position. Barron can get them. He started six times in a seven-game New York audition in April and averaged 11.7 points and 11.0 rebounds. Much to his surprise, he was not invited to any team's training camp. The Suns brought Barron, 29, in for a workout two weeks ago and were close to signing him before Lopez's knee sprain accelerated the decision.

Barron played 82 games over three seasons with Miami, starting 15 in 2007-08. He has been training at the University of Memphis, where he played in college.

"I'm real energetic," Barron said. "I do a lot of the dirty work - take charges, get on the floor, get rebounds. I can pick-and-pop. I just try to be more active out there."

Barron will be on the active roster Wednesday. He is one of 12 available players after the Suns waived rookie guard Matt Janning and assigned rookie forward Gani Lawal to their D-League affiliate, Iowa.

The Suns could have added Barron and been at the 15-man roster maximum but opted to cut Janning, who had not been activated for a game. Janning largely was added to be a third point guard in practices to rest Steve Nash but also had upside as a tall, athletic combo guard.

Earl Barron, with his dead on 15 foot j is going to make a name for himself playing with Nash.
I really can't understand why that guy was still available. my thought is that his defense must be atrocious.  lucky for him that doesn't matter in the land of the suns

Yeah seriously. Him and Hakeem Warrick (and Frye for that matter) are kind of redundant but on the Suns you can never have enough shooting big men who cant play a lick of D.

I’d rather have Earl Barron.
