Okay, folks.  When the annointed ones first came together, I figured they would need another offseason to add another piece with the MLE.  They haven't been able to attract minimum guys to adequately fill the spots above, so let's help them out.

First, vote.

Second, what might they do between now and the playoffs to strengthen their roster?  We can include FA's or possible midseason buy-outs, but we're talking minimum guys for this year.

Third, assuming all goes well in the world and teams are signing players and the MLE still exists, who should they try to pick up this summer?

My take:  Old pal Marcus Banks, currently in the last year of that stupid, stupid deal he got, is a candidate for a midseason buyout.  He still can't distribute for crap, but can play the tough-nosed on-ball defense that Miami needs at PG to slow down opposing PG's.  So I'd say he's a candidate to join Miami after a February (or sooner) buyout (even if he is traded as an expiring at the deadline, NOBODY wants Banks at $4.8 million/yr.).

Does anyone have a list of potential mid-season buyouts?

Let's have a look -- TJ Ford, Michael Redd, Darius Songaila, Peja Stojakovic, Mo Peterson, Eddy Curry, Dan Gadzuric, Solomon Jones.

They are the ones that stand out to me.

TJ Ford = horrible fit

Michael Redd = questionable whether he can still play at a rotation worthy level. If he can, Milwaukee likely keeps him for depth. If not, they waive him and he isn't any use to Miami (a lesser version of J.Jones).

Peja Stojakovic = can't crack Hornets rotation, unlikely to be anything more than an end of bench player in Miami.

Darius Songaila = upgrade over Juwan Howard. Borderline rotation player, could play a small amount of minutes against teams with small front lines. Unlikely to play against teams with good size.

Mo Peterson = not a rotation worthy player and not able to crack Miami's roster (J.Jones + Stackhouse better players)

Eddy Curry = who knows what he is capable of at this point? Horrible fit on Miami's roster anyway.

Dan Gadzuric = a more athletic option as a third string center than Jamaal Magloire but not as good a low post defender. Different rather than better. Not good enough to be anything more than a third stringer.

Solomon Jones = borderline NBA player, not good enough for Miami's roster

Overall

I don't think Miami have much hope in the free agent, mid-season buyout, market this season.

Their two best opportunities (Delonte West and Eric Dampier) have already come and gone (well, Dampier is still available but they continue to show no interest in him).

Could they package Mario Chalmers for anything of use to them?

They seem committed to keeping his but on the bench and he's the only young piece they have. (they've already given away most of their picks of any worth I believe)

There was a report on RealGM a short while ago saying that Miami was offering Chalmers + $3 million in cash to any team that is offering an upgrade at the point guard position. Maybe combining him with some other small contracts and making a run at someone like Jarrett Jack.

If they are making lineup changes, that is the obvious one.

The other is bringing Chalmers into the fold but his confidence level is in the toilet. He won't improve their form in the short term but it's the right move in the long term because he offers the most at the point.

The final option is removing the point guard from the equation and handing the duties over to LeBron or Wade plus putting James Jones into the lineup. If Chalmers isn't in the long term picture, this is my preferred option.

Yeah, I don't think Chalmers and the cash will be enough though.

Could that net them someone like Will Bynum from Detroit (or even Stuckey) if the Pistons decide to save cash at all costs for a sale?

I don't think they'll move stuckey to save money. They can just let him walk if they want to really save cash.

Rip/Prince are the guys to watch.

Chalmers + two minimum contracts (say two of House, J.Howard and/or Magloire) would allow Miami to take back about $4.5 million worth of contract(s). They could also throw Dexter Pittman into the mix to get up to $5 million if necessary. That seems to be the ball park.

Also, Chalmers is in the final year of his contract. Miami is also sending their 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 first round draft picks to Toronto and Cleveland. So they don't have anything to offer up there either, as a further incentive. Just the $3 million in cash.

Not sure what that package is worth ... needs some thought.

(well, Dampier is still available but they continue to show no interest in him).

Reportedly, Miami has some renewed interest:

Quote
Amid the mystery that surrounds center Erick Dampier’s decision not to sign with the Rockets, the only thing clear is this: Miami, Toronto and Phoenix have expressed interest in reigniting conversations with the free-agent big man. The Suns, sources say, were the latest team to inquire on Wednesday. The Heat, who earlier backed away from committing to Dampier, appear to have a different view now that their lack of size has been exposed in recent games against New Orleans (Okafor) and Utah (Paul Millsap.)

The only guys who they should go after are guys who don't need the ball to play.   A lot of these guys don't meet this criteria.  They would just add to problem.

Why do you want to help them? I want to see them lose, they are not the Celtics.

Of course, the big savings is in big money.  When I thought of cash for a player, though, Detroit seems to be a team that might be willing to drop salary while receiving money.  Indy is another, but doesn't have much to offer at the positions Miami needs.

-----------

Why think of ideas to help Miami?  Boredom.  We're pretty much set, assuming we can somehow assemble two servicable centers out of the collection of parts cars we bought this summer...and Miami does have some potential, so it seemed interesting.  I'm still hoping for a fist-fight between LBJ and Bosh, right in the middle of a game while the ball's in play.  Of course, Lebron's afraid to fight and Bosh is a wussy, but still, I hope they lose badly every night.
