I have been very unimpressed with the Heat. Surely, they could prove us wrong in June like they did in 2006. If you recall, that 05-06 team was dysfunctional to the core. Antoine Walker was a starter on that team.
But based on their first 10 odd games to start the year, their weaknesses are beyond evident - they are glaring. You saw that statistic on TNT which exposed Miami's lack of interior play so far this year. They are in the bottom of three important categories - rebounding, shot blocking, and points allowed in the paint I believe.
When your big men are Udonis Haslem, Big Z, and Chris Bosh (oh yeah and Joel the "Machine" Anthony), your interior play will suffer notwithstanding all the talent.
Another reason why Miami's off to such a bad start is Chris Bosh. This guy needs to be a #1 or at worst a #2 to be productive on the floor. He isn't getting the ball as much so his net effect on the rest of his team has suffered. Not that he was ever known for his defense either, but if he doesn't get rid of the soft label, there is no way Miami wins a title, barring a trade to bring in a big named interior presence. That dunk last night by Rondo is proof that Bosh has trouble, or simply does not want to, step up the defensive pressure especially on penetration. By the same token, though, I've seen stranger things happen. Pau Gasol emerged into arguably the best big in the game today because he stopped playing soft. He is graceful, surely, but he grabs boards and plays aggressively now. The talent with either name has nor will ever be a question.
