Daily Dime posts the question of the Lakers reaching 70 wins this year, which I suppose was inevitable, given that the team has started off 7-0 in dominating fashion, coming off a title.

What do you guys think? All the talk in the offseason was about Miami getting to 70 and somewhat ironically, the Lakers went a bit underrated IMO. Barnes/Blake have been very good offseason acquisitions for them. Gasol had a triple-double last night through three quarters.

I'm not sure if the team is defensively good enough or if they'll be able to stave off the injury bug. Impressively, they're doing this without Bynum.

Thoughts?

First off the west is a lot weaker than last season and their schedule is always soft in the beginning. Its almost like this is well thought out to give them every advantage to get back to the finals. They also have the lesser amount of back to backs than all the top teams in the NBA...70 wins doesn't win you anything but a lot of media hype.Wouldn't they look silly winning 70games and losing in the playoffs to the Spurs or OKC.

They've played 5 home game, and haven't played all that many tough teams. Plus they're not going to make 46% of their 3s for the entire year.

Bynum's greatest value is his defense and rebounding. So far Odom has played so well in a starting role that they haven't missed him at all. I expect them to stumble re-intergrating Bynum and when the schedule gets tougher.

They won't make it, IMO - but it would be awesome to see them run over the opposition, crush nearly everyone, and make it all the way to the NBA Finals in June 2011 heavily feared and favored......

.....just like in 07-08. ;)

They have had a cupcake schedule so far - Lots of home games, no back to backs, and bad teams on their slate.

I predict that no team will win 65 games this year in the NBA. There is enough good teams to keep the great teams in check and running roughshod through the NBA like the 86 Celtics, 87 Lakers, and 96 Bulls.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

The league overall is too strong for any team to have a realistic shot at 70 wins - much less 72.

However, here's one of those tidbits that seem to have a way of continuing:

Every time one of Phil Jackson's teams has started the season 7-0, they have won the championship...

Besides Miami and Oklahoma, you could say the Celtics had a "cupcake" schedule, as well. Detroit, New York, Cleveland, Chicago (without Boozer).

Portland and Houston (despite their record) are good teams, and Phoenix (on the road) is decent.

Anyway, too early to tell.

Yes, but most posters aren't claiming that our early wins show that we'll win 70 games.

By ignoring 28% of their games, and forgetting the Bucks were on it the Celtics schedule isn't tough anymore? (and neglecting back to backs)

In other news if you remove the top 4 players, Kobe/Gasol/Odom/Artest, from the Lakers (28% of the roster), they aren't all that talented.

No, I don't think their offense will improve enough over last season + I don't think they are versatile enough to win 70 games.

I thought their team with Trevor Ariza had a chance at 70 wins.

They could...but I seriously doubt it.

70 wins is ridiculously hard to do.  Some many things need to fall into place.  The '96 Bulls had the benefit of new expansion that season and they stayed healthy.

This Lakers team has quite a few guys that are injury prone and this league is more competitively balanced than that '95-96 NBA season.  Lot of competive squads out there right now.

Lakers should almost certainly break 60.  Pretty good shot at 65.  70?  I just don't think so.

It all comes down to motivation. They want one thing and that is their 3rd championship in a row. They dont have a whole lot of youth on that roster, and the youth they do have (Bynum) they have to handle with kid gloves.

If they can miraculously stay 100% healthy, and I should really say 110%, they have a shot...but so do the Celtics.

What are the chances that all of those guys, Kobe, Gasol, Artest, Bynum etc will make it through 82 games with no issues? If anything comes up you can bet Phil will take his foot off the gas like he did last year.

If there is any team that has noth youth AND talent on their side it is Miami but you have already seen the injury bug hit them.

There are many variables that go into the success of a 70 win season, and there is ALOT of luck involved. there is a reason it has only been done twice once!

After the 2007 Mavs won 67 games in a deep West after starting the season 0-4, I really believe it's a possibility that any of the top teams in the league could get to 70 wins in any given year.  All it takes is a lot of health and some luck.

Also those 2 extra home games they get every year when they play the Clippers "on the road" doesn't hurt either.  (A very small factor, but every bit helps when you're going for a record).

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class
