Alright. C's real season a few weeks away, NFL in the thick of it.

Moss deal is history; time to move on. I'm looking at things the Pats could do now to really still make a push this season based on some rumors out there:

Quote
Bernard Berrian was already having a disappointing season at wide receiver for the Minnesota Vikings, and with this week's acquisition of Randy Moss (coupled with the eventual return of Sidney Rice), the BB Gun's reps figure to decrease even further.

Berrian expressed frustration with his lack of production and his increased role when he met with reporters on Friday, according to Tom Peliserro of ESPN 1500 in Minnesota, but said with regard to his future on the team and in the league, "I don't have to worry about that because I can't control any of that. All I can control is what I do."

It's probably fair to list Berrian among the receivers who could potentially see themselves traded this season (Steve Smith, Vincent Jackson, Deion Branch and Lee Evans are a few of the others), although it's unclear what kind of interest he might draw. He clearly hasn't clicked with Brett Favre since the QB arrived in 2009, but he had a very productive 2008 season that could entice a team or two into calling about him (the Vikes don't have a ton of depth at WR, however, so they may prefer to hang onto him).

Of course, if the team most frequently rumored to be looking for a wideout, New England, had eyes for him, they could have just asked for him to be included in the deal that sent Moss back to Minny. So a Tom Brady-to-Berrian combo looks unlikely.

As the rumor points out, Barrian is unlikely, or he would have been part of the moss deal. But what about the others?

I for one would be extremely intrigued by Lee Evans. Each year, I keep hearing about how advanced metrics AND scouting ranks him as one of the best in the game, but with absolutely no one to get him the ball he is extremely underrated. On the Pats, he could easily put up Moss-like numbers. Of course, so could Smith, who is more of a sure thing (but more expensive in salary and in trade assets...I bet Evans could be had for pretty cheap).

Kiper touched on this topic in one Moss reaction column:
Quote
but even a player like Steve Smith can't be considered an impossible get when you're holding such a massive picks portfolio.

Devin Thomas was cut from the Redskins...third year, 2nd WR picked in 2008; plays special teams too; is he salvageable on a good team with a good offense? I don't know, but he could be cheap and worth a try.

And, of course, it'd be fun to have Branch back here.

Switching gears a little, here's a little nugget about Brian Westbrook being unhappy about his role behind Frank Gore:
Quote
All running backs experience plenty of wear and tear during the season, and the same figures to happen with Gore at some point, which could open the door for Westbrook to see some more action. However, there's a good chance Westbrook is regretting his free agency choice, after seeing one-time suitors Denver and Washington going through revolving door situations at running back.

With the Pats' RBs banged up, would he fit on the team in a sort of SuperExpanded K. Faulk role?

Funny to have some legit trading deadline in the NFL.  I kind of like it.

Could the Bills possibly get rid of Lee Evans?

Poor Bills fans; starting QB gets released, he sucked but they aren't rebuilding around Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Marshawn Lynch was their best running back (wishing the Pats had traded for him last offseason, knucklehead but he's strong, fast, hits the hole hard, not that old).

No offense line, no defensive line.  Trying to play a 3-4 without a [dang] nose tackle.

CJ Spiller's a great player in the right situation, but right now he's like a shiny hood ornament on a '92 Ford Taurus.  He's be a great complement to any of the team's elite teams, but he's not a workhorse you can build around - and he was drafted with potential franchise OL and DL guys still on the board.

Now, trade Lee Evans?  To have more draft picks to waste?

Poor Bills fans...

Branch seems the most likely, if he'll restructure his deal.  VJ, San Diego's asking an insane amount of compensation without realizing how little leverage they have.  He's going to end up walking and they'll get nothing.

Followup:

Westbrook:
1 yr. 1.25 guaranteed + 1.25 incentives

Branch:
9/12/2006: Signed a six-year, $39 million contract. The deal includes $13 million guaranteed. 2010: $5.47 million, 2011: $5.95 million, 2012: Free Agent

Smith:
5/8/2007: Signed a six-year, $43.85 million contract. The deal included a $9.3 million signing bonus, a $6 million roster bonus in the second year, and a $2 million roster bonus in the third. 2010: $5.75 million, 2011: $7 million, 2012: $7.75 million, 2013: Free Agent

Evans:
10/2/2008: Signed a four-year, $37.25 million contract extension through 2012. The deal includes $18.25 million guaranteed and a first-year salary of $11,730,770. Another $3 million is available through incentives. 2010: $5.4 million (+ $3 million roster bonus), 2011-2012: $3.025 million (+ $1 million roster bonuses), 2013: Free Agent

Love Evans even more now: descending contract, bulk of it paid.

What would the Bills be looking at for comp, though?  BB's not been afraid to spend draft picks on wideouts, but would you give up a second rounder for a guy who's only cracked 1000 yards twice in his six years?

Would the Bills get rid of him for only a third or fourth rounder?  They need SOMEONE to throw the ball to.

Bad QB play or not, dude played 16 games last season and only caught 44 balls.  I know he's the focus of opposing defenses, but I'm not seeing the love for Evans.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2010/offensive-drop-rate

Quote
As for the receivers with the best hands? Five players were not registered with a single drop, including Greg Camarillo (73 targets), Robert Meachem (66), Pierre Thomas (45), Brian Westbrook (34), and Delanie Walker (33). T.J. Houshmandzadeh only dropped two passes on 140 targets, which seems like a function of his usage pattern, but it's hard to reconcile that logic when Lee Evans only dropped one of the 95 targets thrown to him.
Finally, the two-year totals (minimum: 30 targets in each season). The "best hands" group would have made for a hell of an offense in their respective peaks, with Brian Westbrook (0.9 percent Drop Rate) at halfback, Sidney Rice (1.3 percent) and Lee Evans (1.5 percent) at wideout, and Tony Gonzalez (1.7 percent) catching whatever's left at tight end.

Basically, and i've heard this for a few seasons, if the qb can get evans the ball, it's caught, and brady knows how to get people the ball.

Saw the same thing on Football Outsiders.

Still...  basically putting up a 3/40 each week for Buffalo.  I mean, I *know* the QB situation there is atrocious, but still...

Seems to be a quasi-consensus that Evans has already checked out of this season.  I didn't see last week's game, but we listened to almost the whole thing in the car (driving back from Buffalo, of all places), and there were at least a couple of balls that the announcers thought were catchable that he didn't get.

Chatter on the Bills boards seems to be that it's almost a certainty he's gone, and people don't seem to be expecting more than a fourth-rounder.  That's about what I'd pay, and even doing that depends a lot on how much more he's still owed on the contract.  Signed a 4/$36M deal a couple seasons ago, but not sure how much of that was signing bonus.

He is the guy that some team should try and grab.  He needs a new team.  Somehow, he got so deep into the dog house, he couldn't get out.  He is the type of guy the Pats could turn around.

The word that was floating around the DC sports talk was he had the ability to be the number 1 WR in DC now, but couldn't get on the field.  The excuse was he didn't know the offense yet, but Moss came out this week and said he doesn't quite know the offense yet either.

He could be good or he could be a bust; but he is a guy that will get a 2nd chance.
