The Cleveland Cavaliers went through this exact thing just last season.  When it came to the playoffs, they had too many big men so Mike Brown was forced to pick and choose which big men to play...and in the series against the Cs, what were people saying?  "Where's J.J. Hickson?, Why aren't you playing Hickson more?"

If Sheed comes back, I can picture an overload and maybe the same thing happening...I mean, look at who we'll have at the start of the playoffs...

Perk, Shaq, Jermaine O'Neal, Big Baby, Harangody, AND Rasheed.

Obviously take Harangody off that list for playoff big men, but then you still have the other 5...and in the playoffs Doc will probably have a 10 man rotation at most.

None of this may happen, but I realistically see a problem brewing in terms of playing time and people wanting to get into the game.

Yeah, and that Garnett kid ain't bad, either...

But it sure looks like at least a couple of those names simply can't be on the roster for the playoffs.  Since he's not on the team right now, and I don't believe a player that is waived can rejoin the team that waived him, I'm pretty doubtful that Sheed can come back to us this season.

2 Tongue in Cheek comments:

1. Come on now, Rivers' greatest strength is forming a cohesive and standard rotation and sticking with it.

2. It's almost like we should start considering trading one of those bigs...one that is a 3 million dollar expiring contract off the bench.

As for me, I'm hoping Sheed comes back in February for multiple reasons. I doubt Perk will come back fully 100% this year. As we saw with Perk in Game 6, injuries can happen unexpectedly. If the guys are serious about a championship, they won't care. You can mix and match some with different positions. For example JO can play PF. One of our biggest weaknesses last year was rebounding. Reducing minutes for guys of this age is a bonus. We need the extra size in the playoffs where it's more of a half court game. We need the extra size going against the Lakers.

Worst case - If you have too many, someone can be reduced to the bench, waived, or traded. Would take my chances vs. not having enough weapons.

I think Danny's strategy is to stock pile bigs at the beginning of the season and see which ones make it to the end.

Is this an oxymoron?

Too many bigs is like saying, is it true that you went to too many strip clubs....
HA!   no we cannot get too many bigs.  6 fouls apiece for Gasol and Bynum!
each with a different skill to pay the bills all loaded with 2 dollar bills......

Having too many bigs is a blessing.  If Rasheed comes back, and Perkins is healthy to play for the playoffs, then I say trade Davis & whatever for a better wing player than Marquis Daniels.  I was not at all impressed with Marquis last year, and if we are to defend against the HEAT, etc, we're going to need someone better.

Rather have too many big men than not enough, thats for sure.

I would love to see a rotation of KG, JO, Shaq, Wallace, and Big Baby... Best of all worlds and we could throw many different combos at teams to keep them guessing. Also give these guys some good rest so they can put 110% in for short minutes at a time.

no such thing as too many bigs.

There is zero chance perk, kg, jo, sheed, shaq are all 100% healthy for playoffs, therefore we neeed them all!

It's a nice option to have; however, if Perk is on the road to recovery and (miraculously) everyone else is healthy, I'm not sure I bring Wallace back.  Even without him, someone is getting knocked from the rotation even with 5 bigs.

Maybe if you explained to him that he'd be sitting on the bench, but Wallace whining about not getting minutes (while likely being out of shape), probably isn't a recipe for success.

However, as others have noted, there's a pretty darn good chance someone is hurt.  So I like having the option.

Against a few teams you need five bigs - Sheldon and Scal both saw minutes in the finals. I'm not sure Sheed will be very effective as a fifth big. Sheed coming back allows you to trade BBD and/or Perk though.

If it meant adding a really good third wing - for example if Turner is playing well in Philly but completely redundant with Andre Iguodala - I could see Philly salary dumping Iguodala. Perk, BBD, Nate for Iguadala? You'd have to really consider that.

A nine man rotation of:

BIGs
Shaq / JO
KG / Sheed

Wings
Pierce / AI / Ray

Guards
Rondo / AB or Quis

It might necessitate a second move to pick up a fifth big, but that's manageable. (Or alternatively, you could move Wafer, Quis, and a 2nd rd pick and keep Perk or BBD as your fifth big.)

I hope that Rasheed back in February, according to Paul Pierce, this could happen, I read that he still lives in Boston.
We'll see what happens on that date, the factor Perkins if he recovers well.
Sheed back in February to the playoffs!!!, sure you'll be a great help to the Celtics.
