I was just looking at basketball reference.com and I have decided that the best measure of a player after the season is win shares. I think that after the season is over we should see who has the best team via total win shares.
Win shares has some problems. Notably defensive win shares are handed out in proportion to minutes played based on team defense.

Do you think there is a better tangible way to evaluate a teams quality after the season is over? I was about to see what my 09 team win shares would be but if there is a better way I'd do that.

To illustrate this:

Quote
1. Dwight Howard-ORL 7.1
2. Gerald Wallace-CHA 6.2
3. LeBron James-CLE 5.2
4. Josh Smith-ATL 5.1
5. Kevin Durant-OKC 5.0
6. Lamar Odom-LAL 4.9
7. Andrew Bogut-MIL 4.8
8. Rajon Rondo-BOS 4.7
9. Carlos Boozer-UTA 4.6
10. Dwyane Wade-MIA 4.6
11. Stephen Jackson-TOT 4.6
12. Tim Duncan-SAS 4.5
13. Marcus Camby-TOT 4.3
14. Jeff Green-OKC 4.2
15. Pau Gasol-LAL 4.2
16. Raymond Felton-CHA 4.0
17. Jason Kidd-DAL 4.0
18. Kobe Bryant-LAL 4.0
19. Dirk Nowitzki-DAL 3.9
20. Al Horford-ATL 3.9
Does anyone think that Jeff Green, Raymond Felton, Boozer, or Dirk are top 20 defensive players?

I don't, but they are players who play big minutes on top defensive teams.

with the 30th pick of the 10th round, the thundah select avery bradley

Nice pick.  He can probably play NBA-level defense right now.

Thank Roy. You guys have no idea how mad my girlfriend is getting. We are on vacation and I keep sneaking away to tend to this draft. For this pick I went to the "bathroom" while she waited at the luggage carousel. Well the bags came much quicker than anticipated and she met me outside of the bathroom with four pieces of heavy luggage as I sauntered out of the door staring at my phone trying to get the pick in.

When she found out this was a "just for fun" fantasy draft she all but banned me from this site for the rest of the vacation.

She's napping right now.

Can I give 1,000 tp's?

Off hand no, I don't think tangibly any method would be much better. Though I do think several other metrics would give similar results.

The defensive win shares would be completely off however, and the offensive ones would also be skewed. Players would be in completely different roles on many teams.

I'm going to do something a little crazy here...

With the 28th pick in the 11th round, the Indiana Pacers select Rasheed Wallace

The Pacers think the expected value from drafting a 10-25% chance of 'Sheed returning for playoffs (on a team bound to make the playoffs) is greater than the value of one of these end of bench players remaining.  I've already got some decent depth and another pick at 12.3 so any other player drafted here would be a 3rd stringer or Kobe's backup (which Korver will see some of).  This would really solidify my front court if he does come back.

 ;D ;D ;D

I see your logic here, but given Jeff Foster's continued back problems, I think you should have gone with a surer thing.

Definitely a solid point, but I still have 2 other Centers.

To Faf:  My team is definitely not finished being constructed yet and I could still swing some trades that change my team.  Why do I need a 4th center?  Well, would the celtics welcome 'Sheed back as a 4th center???  Sheed can also play PF as well.  Gasol and 'Sheed would be a fantastic playoff offensive+defensive combination against certain teams.

Marc Gasol isn't a defensive ace though.

Also I'd say that Sheed can't really play PF at this point without hurting the team he plays PF for overall. In some match ups he can do okay but overall his decline in quickness is too great.

The C's would welcome Sheed back because of uncertainty about Perkins. If Perkins can give us much of anything Sheed wouldn't play accept against Orlando and maybe the Lakers.

He's a good defender at the 3, a the 4 his size and rebounding costs his teams a lot.

He plays good team defense though.

Jeff Green's an all right team defender. He's no Nick Collinson. Rumors out of NJ are that Collinson can be had for the right price (defensive PF or athletic wing).

I don't like this for PHI. The difference between Damp and Z is not worth giving up two young prospects in Lee and Hansbrough. I don't consider Bell a rotation player.
