BOS trades Rasheed Wallace, Tony Gaffney, Oliver Lafayette, 2nd rounder

IND trades Jeff Foster and Dahntay Jones

-------------

Why IND: Indiana has a glut of wings (Rush, Granger, Stephenson, Paul George, Dunleavy). They get out of the remaining 3yrs/~$7M of Jones' contract. Buying out Rasheed saves them money over Foster's contract (makes about the same as Wallace). Get and future 2nd for their trouble.

Why BOS: Foster has played with JO before and is a veteran banger to help develop Semih Erden. More importantly D. Jones duplicates 95% of what we lost in Tony Allen. Jones is a very good wing defender, maybe 85-90% of what Allen was, but a better shooter than Allen.

Depending upon what type of offers Danny is getting for Sheed's contract, this would work for me.

Foster's coming back from a back injury, which scares me.  He's the longest-tenured of the current Pacer players, and they seem to want to keep him around (plenty of times they could have traded him for value in the past).  They've never seemed inclined to let him go in the past.

Larry's also the worst in the league at overvaluing his own players.

Jones would help, but he was overpaid from the moment he signed that contract and was a major disappointment last year.  With that said, two weeks ago I would have figured no way Danny gives ANYONE other than Pierce or Rondo guaranteed money past 2012; if he was offering TA the same money Memphis gave him, there's clearly at least a little wiggle room.

So, I think I'd do it.  As was noted the other week, though, much of Indiana's pressures have to do with the luxury tax, and the tax thrreshold came in a couple million higher than expected.  So, less pressure on them to do pure salary dumps.  Not that Indiana shouldn't unload salary; mediocre (at best) squad in a small market, they have absolutely no business paying that group of players anything close to $70M.

Suppose that if Foster's back remains an issue, C's could always trade him as an expiring deal in February.  Not bad to have a ~$7M expiring contract to play with.

Foster had a back injury last year and they said at the time he should be back for this coming training camp.

This isn't as exciting a deal as getting Josh Howard, but if Foster checks out physically, I really like this idea.

Foster still in the league? Dahntay is basically TA with worse D. Both are offensively challenged.

Nice idea, tp

Dahntay can shoot a little better than TA come on no ones shot is as ugly as TA's. I also believe Dahntay is a little bigger if not in height then definitely in weight.

Jones isn't a rotation worthy player. Fifth wing in the depth chart.

Jeff Foster is interesting but I am not convinced that Larry is ready to part with him.

This definitely isn't a bad idea at all. Dahntay, like TA, would make an excellent 4th wing on this team.

I'm still clinging to hope that the Celtics can land a more 6th man level wing with the sheed deal. I suppose I'll keep clinging until Josh Howard is off the board...

I don't agree with the Jones assessment at all. I saw this guy's stats on a regular basis last year as he was a back up on my fantasy team. He gives you more offense than TA, is a decent defender and can play the 2 or 3, which we need a back up for both positions as of right now. Allen is clearly a better defender, but if Jones were to come here and accept a role like TA's we all may be surprised. He's bigger, he's very athletic and has a good shot. He's not a deep threat, but neither was TA. Can he stop LeBron or Wade on his own? Doubtful, but he'll make who ever is guarding him play defense. Foster is a great pick up cause he'd do the dirty work and fill in admirably as a backup C, and could see time at the 4. He's a waaay better option than resigning Scal!

Ew and double Ew.

Foster had what one semi decent year in a bad situation in Indiana. He hasnt done anything for a long time. And Dahntay Jones? Yuck. Has he ever cracked any rotation...Ever?

For his career, Foster's averaged 7.0 rebounds/game in only 21 minutes.  Not too many players who average one rebound every three minutes.  Lots of offensive rebounds, too.

He's never been outstanding, but between '04-'05 and '07-'08 he was grabbing 8-9 boards a game while playing only 24-26 minutes.  Look at the stats - very consistent over those 4 or 5 seasons.

Is he an All Star?  Nope.

Is he a great offensive player?  Nope, but he doesn't kill you on that end.  50% shooter for his career.  Those offensive rebounds would help a lot, though.

Is he one of the better rebounding bigs?  Sure has been over most of his career.

The only REAL question whether he's healthy.  If "yes," Foster would be an excellent backup 5.

Foster is a good defensive center, particularly in pick and roll situations. No offense to speak of, can't shoot from more than three feet away from the basket, but he's actually a decent passer for a big man and a decent rebounder. However, you may be right that that was a couple years ago. Foster's back and hip injuries in recent years (only 16 games last year, shut down in December) may prevent him from being able to show on screens on the defensive end - his quick feet were his best defensive asset - and go after boards. If he had a cleaner bill of health, I'd be all over getting him.

Jones is as bad offensively as TA - he is not a better shooter, not worse, but they're both so poor at shooting that they can't really be considered better than anybody. However, he definitely cracked the rotation of the 09 Nuggets, playing the defensive stopper role on a team that made the Western Conference Finals and he did a decent job on Kobe. Way overpaid, but can give some defensive minutes and we presently don't have any minutes coming off the bench at the wing.

Like others this isn't my first option but honestly, it's something I'd consider strongly if they can't do anything else with Sheed's contract.
Go Celtics.

In a good year, Foster can get you 6 points and 7 rebounds in 20 minutes shooting 60% FT.  Dahntay Jones would be OK during the regular season I guess but has not really impressed me.  This would be better than nothing but I would be disappointed if this is all we get for the remaining roster spots.

I would be more interested in using Sheed's contract to acquire Songaila and Julian Wright.

Is Foster in good health these days?
