Matt Barnes just wrote

"Couple new teams just jumped n2 the game, so I'm sorry 2 say ima have 2 get back 2 you. Ill let yall know something with in the nxt few days"

mmmmh.... Do you want this guy?

unfortunately maybe the celtics had to go after him harder after losing out on Brewer today.
I don't think Orlando would be willing to help us out with a sign and trade for Sheed's contract, so the idea that other teams jumped in does not bode well for us. We can't increase our offer the vet min is what we can offer. That's it.

Apparently, Boston was offering Ronnie Brewer a 3 year, 12 million dollar deal through some sort of sign-n-trade arangement with Memphis.  They're under the cap, so Boston could get a trade exception in return.

Mike
I didn't think of that. How much would a trade exception be worth. Ta Signed for 2 years 10 million correct? Does it matter how much he makes over the first year or is it the average value of the contract. Assuming it is the averaging value we could get a contract for 125% of the year one value (the most salary we could take back) or just $5 MM. If we could get a $6.75 trade exception that would be huge for us.

We could sign Howard Barnes or Shaq even without using any of Sheed's trade money.

Just to clarify, if we're talking about a trade exception, if we took back no salary a trade exception would be 100% of the first year value of TA's contract.  The 125% rule wouldn't work.  We then could use that trade exception to acquire a player making up to 100% + $100k of the trade exception value.

Now that Brewer is settled, more money will chase Barnes. We can't be in the running for him, IMO.  Our only real chance, which is also remote, is Josh Howard. I wish Danny would have opened the pocket book a little more for Brewer, he would have fit well into our team. I think a little extra cash would have pursuaded him to come here instead of Chicago. Plus, would not be surprised to see Ray coming off the bench by next season.

In fairness to Danny, he would have been limited in a proposed deal by how much Memphis was willing to pay TA.

I think both Tony Allen and Ronnie Brewer reflect the difference between convincing a good vet to play for a contender or convincing a good young player to play for a contender. It's much easier to tell a guy who has already made some good money and had his chances to start and flourish to take a reduced role for a shot at a ring than it is to convince a younger player who wants a chance to play more and see how good he can really be in the NBA to do the same.

I'd consider Tony a vet now and not a young player and the thing is both of them aren't going to be in the roles that they think they will.  I think Korver should start for the Bulls so it gives them more shooting in the starting lineup and bring Brewer off the bench.

With TA he's going to get about as much playing with Memphis being behind OJ Mayo and Rudy Gay as he would here maybe less.  In Memphis though he could get more run handling the point though behind Conley.

I fully agree with you, they will never be the type of players they think they might be, but it's hard to convince them of that, and I can't blame them. They only get one chance to play in the NBA in their prime, they want to see how good they can actually be if they get enough playing time. For Tony, he's been in the league 6 years and has had a ton of injuries, this is likely the only chance he will ever have to do this, and memphis must have promised him playing time somehow. To build a championship bench, you have to add older guys who can sill contribute like Sheed and Pj Brown, because they are much more willing to take the reduced roles.

If the Brewer thing means that Ainge can work some sort of sign-n-trade with TA to Memphis, I'm a lot more hopeful of Boston landing Barnes.  It would make sense for Brewer to be option #1, but I can't think of any reason not to offer Barnes the same sort of deal.

I'm not totally sold on Matt Barnes. Ronny Brewer would have been a great sign, but Matt comes with more attitude then actual game. I'd rather have a proven defender. Am I wrong?
