Jermaine Oneal? Is this a joke? We re-signed Pierce to contend and now were talking about signing guys like Jermaine Oneal and Antoine Wright?

I agree (TP) ... I think he's a thug and a major under-achiever. Please say it isn't so.

Ughh!  I'm not sure I want to see him in green for even just the veteran minimum.  I would much rather see the other O'Neal come here.

14 points, 7 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and 53% shooting in 28 minutes are pretty darn good numbers.  Who out there is better, especially for only a portion of the MLE?

Nobody! Youre talking about a guy who is arguably better than Haywood at a third of the price and he can play PF. He is 31! Don't tell me Brad 'not an athlete' Miller at 34 or Shaq at 38 is better! O'Neal is the best option and fit for this team. LOL the Celtics are thugs - on the court! We bullie and harrass everyone we play against. O'Neal and his personality will fit perfectly with Doc and the Big 4! For 3 million (because it is only a portion of the MLE) sign me up.

He did that as a ball hog on a mediocre team that lacked any other semi-competent big man. At this point, I would rather pay Shaq or Brad Miller. At least Shaq can draw fouls and grab boards, and Miller can stretch the floor. Jermaine is very injury prone, he may not hold up long enough for Perkins to get back.

I think people underrate J.O.  He had a pretty good season last year, and for a portion of the MLE, I think he'd be a steal.

I agree here. JO is still a legitimate defensive presense in the NBA. When it comes to big men, I wonder what posters think 3mil will get you in free agency.....

O'Neal put up good numbers last year. Opinions of him are skewed because he played so poorly against one of the best defensive centers in the game last year. There were reports that he was playing injured and with how poorly he played I believe them.

A portion of the MLE is a good move as long as it's less than half.

He's only 31 and used to be a 20/10 guy. Maybe he finally is healthy this year.

Playing with a team that passes as well as we do would make him look better than he did. He can finish inside and shoot the J.

And we were somehow happier talking about signing Kwame yesterday?

Uh, those numbers are basically the same production as Sheed and Big Baby combined in about 9 fewer minutes.

Agree.  He'd be one of the better backup centers in the league once Perk gets back.  We'd likely not do better than him to fill in until Perk does make it back, and frankly, I think Perk will struggle this season when he does come back.  Sure, he might play, but like Leon, he really won't be himself this season.  At least, that'd be my guess.

Anyway, for a portion of the MLE I think it'd be a great signing.

People just dont understand. I don't get how you could trash this acquisition with the players honestly available and the assets we have. If Ray leaves then the Sheed contract is being used on a Shooting Guard. Period. If Ray stays it is still probably used on a wing that can provide bench scoring. There aren't a ton of 7 footers that can play inside and out available for a portion of the MLE.

Here's a thought. Poster opposed to this transaction please post on here who you would like the Celtics to sign with a portion of the MLE, that we could realistically get, and explain why it is a better move than getting Jermaine. I would love to see the analysis behind your reasoning. Please only bring up on the court things as well because O'Neal does not have a poor history off the court.

I think Jermaine is absolutely the best option available and while he hasn't been great, we don't have the ability to go out and get a great guy right Center right now.  And we could without a doubt do worse than a solid defender with playoff experience.

Somewhat unrelated, but I think people are also overrating Brad Miller. That guy that played so well against the Celts 2 years ago? He isn't walking through that door...

My lack of hate for JO or Kwame is fueled by my fear of a "Celts sign Brad Miller to a 3-4 year full MLE deal".

I think he'll do well on this team as a temp starter and later as a backup.
