This article is retarded. Straight up, retarded. Hollinger can burn in hell. His arguments suck, and are wrong. Its not like I'm just blindly rejecting his premise -- he's just completely wrong. Like on all counts. What a freaking moron.

Here's a good comment from the comments section that refutes most of his retardation (but not all of it, there's just simply too much to be dealt with):

The Lakers of LA have won 11 championships.
The Celtics of Boston have won 17 championships.
Russell, Parish, Cowens, Heinsohn, Havlichick, Jones, Cousy, McHale, Ramsey, White, Walton, Bird, Jones, Pierce, Garnet, Allen, Sharman, Johnson...
The celts have 23 players in the HOF, with 3 more on their roster
The Lakers have had 16 players in the HOF with Kobe and Shaq in the wings
The players on the Celts are just as impressive as the ones on the Lakers, even more so one might say.

No way you can say LA beats Boston - the championships says it all 17-11.

And don't give me this crap of including the Minnesota years.
If the Yankees moved to Oklahoma City next year, would that make Oklahoma City the best MLB franchise ever?
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Well, they're still the same FRANCHISE they were in Minnesota all those years ago. But I think the connection ends there, personally.

Now when people talk about Lakers/Celtics it's LA and Boston, not Boston and the LA Lakers of Minneapolis.

So, imo.. The BOSTON Celtics > LOS ANGELES Lakers.

Well, if we're talking about the modern NBA, you have to pick the Lakers.  Most of the edge that the Celtics have comes from the 50's and 60's when the NBA was still in its infancy.

You can't blame people for considering the Lakers' franchise superior when in the history of the NBA as we know it the Lakers have been by far the most dominant and consistently well managed franchise.

They do have an unfair advantage, though - the biggest basketball market in the country with tons of celebrities to galvanize the fanbase.  They've gotten so many huge free agents because of that, and will continue to do so.

First of all - step off the ledge. Rankings articles are the stupidest kind - but they fill pixels during the slow times.

Hollinger said in a chat or round table during the playoffs that Boston is the best city franchise, but Lakers are best overall (meaning you count both cities.)

But the big black eye that Boston has in its argument is 1986 - 2008. That was a big gap between championships. Beyond that they only had one or two very good post Bird teams. Additionally they have only had one franchise player (Paul Pierce) and now maybe two (Rajon Rondo.)

I always thought an advantage that Boston had is their best players were life long C's - Russell (50s, 60s), Hondo (70s), Bird (80s), Pierce (08) - the best players from each of the championship eras are full time Celtics. For LAL - Wilt, Kareem, and Shaq all did their work elsewhere before (and in Shaq's case after) LAL.

Boston is back where it belongs.

Ditto what you just said...thank you for saving me the time and energy of having to type this all out. TP for the common sense approach to the matter.

Yes because all those years in the 50's and 60's don't count.....  ::)

The "Modern NBA" argument is silly. You could say that the Bulls are the greatest "Modern NBA" team because Jordan was so dominant. The NBA in the 70s-80s was still in its teenager ackward years after all.

I think we need to root for the Lakers to bring in their version of Rick Pitino to run their franchise into the ground for a decade or so.....

The Lakers are the best franchise.  They have played in half of the NBA Finals (all time - 31 total) and have missed the playoffs just 5 times in their 62 years of existence (and lost in the first round just 7 times).  In otherwords, in 50 of their 62 years the Lakers have won at least one playoff series.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

I'm not saying it's right, I'm just explaining why most people probably see it the way they do.

The NBA of the 50's and 60's was the NBA and it still counts, but it was also drastically different from what we see today. It's hard to deny the fact that since 1980, the Lakers have been the most dominant franchise.

When did the majority of people really start paying attention to basketball?  If you said "After 1980" then you're probably on the right track.

They're the most consistent, but I don't agree that they're the best.

So perception is reality? Like I said you can say the same about the Bulls, more young fans came in with Jordan than Magic/Bird .

Most playoff appearances.  Most wins.  Best win percentage.  Most Finals appearances (and only 1 less title overall).

If you asked this question to any non-Celtic or non-Laker fan, 99% would say the Lakers are the better franchise.
