I read that Portland was trying to move up in the draft.
Sheed + #19 + future (protected) first to Portland for Greg Oden?

a pipe dream, but a dream nevertheless....
I love this.  Id even include Perk or baby.  Maybe both.....maybe

Well, the ESPN report says Danny isn't enamored with players at the 19th spot. That could mean a couple of things:

1.) He likes the players higher in the draft but has been stonewalled in attempts to get them

2.) He doesn't like  the players that he feels will be available at this level for the price and amount of years he would have to commit to them

3.) Both 1. and 2.

4.) He likes the players projected lower in the draft at the spots they are projected due to salary value levels

5.) Both 3. and 4.

6.) He just sees no good players in this draft and wants to get a pick in a future draft

7.) They have gone into full "save money unless it helps us win next year" mode and don't want to have to pay for a first rounder to develop while sitting on the bench knowing they are going for another run with this group and there won't be a lot of practices or playing time to develop a young player. Also, by going for it all for next year, they don't have a young player sitting around twiddling his thumbs when the one whole season long lockout occurs the year after next.

Apparently, Portland and the Knicks are discussing Rudy Fernandez:

http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/67391/20100623/blazers_knicks_discussing_fernandez/

Blazers want a pick, which New York doesn't have.

Who says no?

Boston trades #19 and Rasheed Wallace
Portland trades Rudy Fernandez and Martell Webster

Reduces the logjam at SG/SF. Roy, Miller, and Bayless share backcourt minutes, while Batum takes over at SF, and spot minutes for Roy there as well in the three-guard offense.

if that realgm story is right (that NYK might send Chandler for Rudy, we gotta get Rudy... then send him on for Chandler!!).

Ainge's "feelings" on the 19th pick could just as easily be a smoke screen ---- this is what i assume it is ---- to drive the price of picks around #19 down, so he can go get another 1st... :-*

Perhaps he is trying to package Sheed and the 19th or something of that sort. That's the only thing that makes any sense. Otherwise, we can get a very respectable player at 19 in this draft, as there are quite a few bigs and some really good wings as well.

I think some of you are misreading this.  It is not saying that he is deadset on moving out of the draft, it just says that he does not like the value at 19, and he is looking to move, and that he is open to exchanging it for a future pick.  To me, this means that he is trying to move up or down, but if he can't, he will be open to the option of rolling it over for a pick in a future draft...but I think it would have to be the right team, and I don't think that is Plan A (or even plan G).

Perhaps Danny, who isnt afraid to go against conventional thinking, sees the best player that will be available to them not off the board till much later and is willing to trade the pick and pick up a second rounder to get him.

Its the whole 'if you can buy a car, then why buy the same car for more money when you could of paid less?' logic.

Here is what Chad Ford and Bill Simmons say about the Celtics pick. If they grab a backup point like Bledsoe I will be p---ed.

Chad Ford, ESPN Insider:
Wow, you're letting me have the Celtics. Bledsoe and James are my first 2 choices for Boston. If both guys are gone, I think Danny trades the pick. If they keep it, I'd take Jordan Crawford

Danny says hey!

sportsguy33:
Agree with everything - probably trade it (or trade up), but if it's kept, then Crawford. And if that leads to the end of the Trick Or Treat Tony Era in Boston, then allow me a quick backflip.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I think there's too many balls in the air (Doc, Sheed, Ray etc) to guess what Danny is up to here.  I'm guessing he knows  :-\?
Think he's just putting a toe in the water tho ..
Stay classy, San Diego. Hello, Baxter? Baxter, is that you? Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee. Is this Wilt Chamberlain? Have the decency to say something.

  • Another undersized Celtic...
It's a weak draft after #10. Seriously. We don't need more projects. Pull a Belichick and trade the pick for future considerations, or a role player we can use right away. Rondo's and Tony Parker's don't fall into your lap every year, there's no need to guarantee any money to a kid that may never get off the bench.

I hate this. If we move out of the first round that will be very disapointing. We have a good pick and we went far that worked out well. Now we have a chance to get a decent young guy. Unless he turns into something sweet I will not be very happy about this.
Ditto.  TP.

If Ainge moves this pick for a future first rounder or sells the pick, I really don't like the message he will be sending out to the ticket buying public.
Essentially he's saying, hey, we may suck all year but as long as we get into the playoffs and make a run that's what matters and too freaking bad if our poor regular season nets us a good pick, we're going to trade it away because we need more old players to help us in the playoffs.
My thoughts exactly, TP.

we need two or three guys from this draft that can contribute NOW. selling the pick sends me a sign they are going to go with this same group one more time. we need to get younger from this draft

I'm not a fan of #7 because that's the attitude we should have had the last couple of seasons (and did), not the attitude we should have now.
