It's time for NBA marketing to switch gears.

Why would Stern want to switch gears or address officiating when the league is doing so well financially?

The ref thing is essentially a perception issue, so I think the league should invest in a study of all game video over a month of a season. All missed calls that were not made and all calls made should be tallied and the numbers should be released to the public.

This needs to be done so that the league can say, "look, refs will never be perfect, but here are the numbers and we can see that the missed calls even out". Without doing this, we are leaving the evaluation to casual viewers who don't know how to evaluate this scientifically and who don't have the research savvy to control for their own biases.

There is a desperate need for some kind of (relatively) objective oversight committee to be set up, in order to review rules and procedures on a regular basis, for the sake of fairness, boundaries, and to make the system more efficient as well as less manipulative.

The fact that the NBA, it's officials, and it's management, are for the most part accountable to NO ONE, is not only irresponsible and egregious, but completely condusive to the kind of problems that are becoming more and more prevelant throughout the league.

There are really very few professional organizations that lack the kind of accountability and oversight that is presently entitled the NBA. It was needed ten or even twenty years ago, but now it has become absolutely essential if this league is to survive.
