I mentioned this in another thread, but I recently read an article in ESPN Mag about players who "sell" fouls the most.  NBA players were interviewed, and the names that came up most were Pierce, Kobe, and Durant.

Pierce has perfected getting people in the air or off balance and then stepping into them.  I don't think it's a "sell," it's just that Pierce makes sure that the refs know he has been fouled.  Otherwise, what's the point?
It's selling. He exaggerates minor contact off the dribble, while many other players will just continue to dribble through the minor contact. Rondo does it too. It is a bit undignified, but who cares. Do what you have to. If the guy bangs you, what else are you going to do buy make him pay?

That's why I like players like Varejao. You have to sell the charges. If you try too hard to remain standing, you lose the charge call you could have had.

On defense, Pierce doesn't flop. Probably harder to do for the guy who is regularly covering the guy who is driving to the hoop. It is the help defenders or guys playing post defense who usually flop on defense.

It's not a sell....Pierce's upfake and then barreling forward into a straight up and down defender is a [dang]ed embarassment of an obvious star call that discredits the NBA.  The same move is an offensive foul by pretty much anybody but Pierce.

It's no difference than the messiah's 4-5 dribbless steps, Nash and Wade's palming on most of their posessions, or O'Neal's 2-3-4 pivot changes in the post right in front of the officials.

The flopping that's allowed and rewarded is just icing on the cake for the Donaghyesque officiating.

First of all, that's not a star call. Those calls are given to everyone, players just aren't that good at getting defenders to bite on their up-fakes, in fact, few actually do up-fakes.

Secondly, very rarely do defenders go straight up and down.

Pure unadulterated homerism, Bud.

Very rarely does Pierce not barrel forward on this move.  It's charging virtually every time he does it.  It's irrelevent whether or not the player bites on the upfake.  He's still entitled to go straight up and down without getting bowled over in the air.

I'm as big a C's fan as there is.  That constant star call, like all others...Along with the incessent flopping makes me sick.

Clean the game up by officiating by the freaking rulebook for ALL players.  Call techs for obvious flopping.  If the players were allowed to police themselves, the elbows and flopping would stop on it's own.

Not homerism. Again, that play gets called in favor of the offensive player every single time, except for Pierce that one time when he hit the 3-pointer, regardless of the player. You do a fake, get a guy in the air 99 times out of a 100 you get the call regardless of you being a star or not.

fisher, varajo, miller, ginobli....sad that we can all identify them, yet refs in the nba have been unable to do so yet.  :(

I'm sure the refs are aware of the floppers.

Check out this Ginobili flop. He overreacted so much that the refs called nothing. That's what you get, Manu.

Fisher was the worst for a few years until Manu came along.  The flailing of arms on almost every drive is enough to make me crazy.

Manu did teach Fisher a lesson a few years ago when Fisher was with the Jazz against the Spurs in the playoffs.  They had flopped back and forth and Fisher was obviously frustrated. Fisher was swinging his arms a little as he ran down the court away from the ball.  Manu ran up behind him and flopped as Fishers arm came back.  It got Fisher thrown out of the game.  Very similar to Perk getting a T against the Magic as his arm came back when he helped his teammate up.

"So it happens Jazz guard Derek Fisher, president of the NBA Players Association, inadvertently bumped into Ginobli while running back down the court. Upon incidental contact Ginobli launched himself with technique that would win him the high-jump bronze at a seventh-grade track and field meet. "

Pre-Jordan....Thomas would have been Malone'd by Dwight Howard the next time down the court with that smirk of his.  The Red Sea would have parted for Thomas to drive and Howard would have clotheslined him.

And sure enough Gortat flopped on the other end at 0:38. Man, that is bogus.

Flopping is disgusting.

No one mentioned Noah?  He's probably second to Varejao.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale
