Among the many over-used terms in sports is this one: 'Must-Win'.

Clearly, the term's only literal application occurs when a team faces elimination.  However, its use as a practical term gives us license to misuse.  I hope my use here is acceptable.

The C's must win Game 1 or Game 2.  Obviously, Game 1 is neither a literal or practical must-win, but I'd hate to lose Game 1, because that would immediately make Game 2 a very early must-win.  Why? I simply cannot see the C's winning 3 straight at home against the Lakers. Going back to LA down 3-2 is not acceptable. The C's need to prevent the uphill climb of having to win the last two in LA.  The best way to prevent this scenario is win Game 1 or 2.   This is me doing what my wife says I do best: stating the obvious.

If you accept this logic, then please share your thoughts about the C's likelihood of grabbing Game 1 or 2.   With 5 full days of rest, I am hoping that Rondo, TA, Baby, Sheed, Perk and KG are all back to Game 1-Orlando form.  But what if they aren't?  Kobe is also resting -- he looked great in the Suns series and will be chomping at the bit to eat the C's up in Game 1 -- you know, send a message/set the tone, and all that.  If the C's get swallowed up by the LA energy in Game 1, then what are your thoughts about the C's capacity to regain control in Game 2?

Yes -- the C's have been a good (perhaps great) road team when healthy this year.  That's the away-court advantage folks have alluded to in other threads.  But against LA?  Against rested and highly energized LA?

I realize this is idle speculation -- it's anyone's guess what will happen in the first 2 game -- but I am convinced we'll need one of them to win #18 and I just would like to hear some of your realism and perhaps a dash of optimism (or pessimism if you must) about these first 2 games.  Perhaps you can help ease some of Neurotic Guy's anxiety (apolgies for the third person reference).

Umm, maybe just me but arent all games supposed to be 'must win'? ;D

I know, I get your point. We do need to win 1 or 2 to set the tone as it were. Winning the opener in LA would be a sweet affirmation that the collective minds of the 'expert' analysts are basically empty.

It also would do wonders for our team's confidence. No small thing that, IMO.

What is most important is to win EITHER game one or game two. Sure, winning game one takes off all the pressure of a must win game 2. Hell, with this group of Celtics, they could win both games in LA and still go back to LA down 3-2....not likely, but maybe back to LA up 3-2.

As long as we go back to LA up 3-2, C's will be NBA Champs.

I want game 1.

That way, we don't have to keep hearing about Phil Jackson's record when winning game 1.

I think the Celtics have enough advantages to win four of the remaining five games should they drop the first two in LA.

Obviously, it's not a good situation to be in but I think they can pull it off.

Normally, I am overwhelmingly negative about a team's chances when they are down 0-2 but given the matchups in this series ... I think the Celtics are capable of coming back from that deficit and winning the series.

We should win game one.

Because if that happens, whoever didn't play well for the Lakers will end up under a microscope, talk will begin of 2008, and the pressure will build on the whole group for game two. I don't think that team is nearly as tightly knit as they'd like us to believe they are. Imagine if Boston wins game one and Gasol plays poorly. Now imagine Kobe glaring at him in the locker room before game two. Imagine now Gasol tightening up. And missing a couple shots at the beginning of game two.

Interesting possibilities, no?

Basically, what I want to see in the first two games is what we saw vs. Cle/Orl. The undoing of a fragile "team" that doesn't respond well to being punched in the mouth. I think if we hit the Lakers hard enough, we'll see them more clearly for what they are: Kobe and a bunch of guys he regards as his inferiors, who are there only to help him win another ring.

Game 1 will be the tougher of the two for the Celts to win, but either way works.  I see either of these teams responding to a loss in Game 1 with a win in Game 2.  They're both seasoned enough to know that they can't lose both, and they both know how to respond to pressure games.

All of which adds up to this being a hell of a series.
Yup

Yes, the Celtics need to win 1 of 2 on the road to start the series, because I believe they will win 2 of 3 at home.  Using that logic, a Game 1 or 2 win means they would lead the series 3-2 going back to LA, where I believe they could win 1 of two games.  However, to go home down 0-2, I think Kobe too good to give that type of lead in a series.  Even if the Celts win the 2 of 3 at home, they would have to win two on the road in LA, something I do not believe they could do.

For the NBA finals, no one is immune to splitting the first two games. Aside from the Miami-Dallas series, all opponents aimed to split the first two.

Then, the key afterwards is to win the key game 4. If Bird's three on the buzz went in, we would have all forgotten Magic's baby sky hook in '87. The series would have gone 7 and it wouldn't be clear if the Lakers could have pulled it off.

Thus, split the first two games ... win game 4 and then 5 and either 6 or 7. For some reason, the Celts always lose game 3.

I thought that the Celtics won game 3 in Miami in the opening round and beat Orlando at home to go up 3 -0 in the ECF.  They have lost either game 3 or Game 4 in all the series.

Game 1 is not a must win situation for either team. Game 2 is pretty much a must win for the loser of game 1.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

One of the first two; I'm not really worried about which one.

People can talk all they want about "Phil Jackson's teams never lose if they win Game 1" but the Celtics hadn't lost a series after being up 3-2 in the history of the franchise - until last year.  There's always a first time.
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.
