Looking back: Not resigning James Posey

I know I was calling for Danny Ainge's head when he didn't resign Posey.  But last year with the exception of ppg every category for him dropped off. This year every category was down. I also look at the emergence of Rondo, BBD, and even Tony " I need a nickname" Allen, and I am starting to think that Ainge may have known what he was doing by not offering Posey more money and more years.

What are other people's thoughts?

Never had a problem with Posey not being resigned.

My biggest problem that offseason was resigining Sam Cassell after we signed House.

I had no problem with the signing of POB, but I thought he was being signed as a 3rd string center, but he ended up being our 2nd string center. Still he was traded to bring Moore here, so on that regard it was a good move. We still needed that other big though.

But in all, the Posey thing I was completely on board with. Still am.

Not signing posey was the right move. In 2012 the C's will have cap space to offer a max level free agent(as long as they don't give TA a crazy contract and don't offer anyone the mle past 2012 or sign Ray past 2012) . If posey was signed it would have been til 2013 . So it was definitely the right move.

What I think is Posey got greedy ( more power to him I guess ) and wanted an extra year which DA rightfully declined.  Now he can live in obscurity in NO.

Posey had a come back type of year with us and was trying to prove he wasnt the lazy slug he appeared to be in Miami. He wanted another multiyear contract for decent security and there is nothing wrong with that. It just happened to be elsewhere because Danny remembered that Posey lasted until the end of the free agent signing period for a reason and wasnt sure that reason would not return. It has returned in New Orleans, Posey is not playing with the same fire and intensity he did with us.

Danny is a lot smarter than we give him credit for with many (not all) of these players. Grab them when they are hungry and let them go when they are not. I think most of the lower end salary FA guys are 'guess work' signings that only pan out occaisionaly for the GM's. When they do they look like genius's, but it only takes one Blount and that is what people remember.

If KG doesn't get injured last year, I bet the loss of Posey would have been felt much more.  I think the chemistry with Posey on the Celtics would have compensated for any decline in his skills.

Of course, resigning Posey would have have made it very financially difficult to bring in Sheed, leaving Boston undersized when facing off with Cleveland, Orlando and the Lakers.

Not overspending for Posey was never a problem.  It was not using the money for something else of worth that offseason that was a problem. 



But, it no longer matters.  The Celtics have their 8 man playoff rotation right now and it is working for them.

I was on the "we should have re-signed Posey" bandwagon. In fact, I was even claiming that we should trade our expirings for him this season... :P

I had great memories of Posey and thought we needed him badly this season but I was wrong. Glad to being proven wrong by TA (totally unexpected). In retrospect, it looks like Danny made the right move by no-resigning Pose.

Ainge gambled that 1 of TA/Walker/Giddens/buy-out acquisition would become a playoff rotation player.  He struck out in 2009, but TA's paying off in 2010.

If he had a good season, then why did Doc bury him in the playoffs?

Tony was Tony last season. Whatever light that was years overdue to go on in his head happily seems to have come on this year, so Posey really isn't necessary.

I can't wait until we win it this year and Posey becomes a mere footnote in Celtic History.  Until then though sadly we'll have to hear how important a 7/4 guy was to getting #17 and how that 7/4 guy not being resigned prevented the C's from repeating (KG)...

Posey was HUGE in getting #17. Posey is one of the most unselfish players on the court I've ever seen.

I'm fine with Danny's decision. But posey was huge.He's getting a standing ovation from me wherever he is.
