He may be a bust for where he was picked in the draft, but he's a legit 7 footer and can block shots. Is he worth a look in the offseason for cheap?

Isn't he expected to leave the NBA and go back to Europe?

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
There is definitively no foreseeable scenario where Darko Milicic even looks at the Celtics in the off-season.

He's either going back to Europe (likely), or he's staying in Minnesota.

He recently said that he is reconsidering going back to Europe, now that the Timberwolves are giving him a chance to play, and are not burying him deep on the bench.

I think we can get better players to come play for us for similar money.

I think he has a decent skillset. I don't see why he couldn't be a valuable backup center for some team ala Gortat.

True. But, legit 7 footers with decent skillsets are pretty rare.

I'm more worried about a backup 3 than a backup big.

I suppose I would give Darko a look if that makes you feel any better... but as IP said I think he's either back to Europe or sticking with the TWolves.

If Perk is traded, then I think Darko is worth pursuing as his replacement.

Otherwise, no.

Maybe three years ago I'd have taken that gamble, now I don't see it.

8 points/g

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

talented 7 footers are hard to find (even if they are former lottery busts reduced to role players). I'd at least give him a look this off season.

A list of free agent big men who will/may be available for the MLE or less
  • Power forwards -- Luis Scola (R), Tyrus Thomas (R), Udonis Haslem, Amir Johnson, Louis Amundson ... Travis Outlaw, Channing Frye, Al Harrington, Hakim Warrick, Drew Gooden, Craig Smith
  • Centers -- Darko Milicic, Marcus Camby, Kwame Brown ... Shaquille O'Neal, Ben Wallace, Jermaine O'Neal ... Rasho Nesterovic, Kyrylo Fesenko (R),
I think there are a four power forwards who offer a lot more value to the Celtics than Darko Milicic, and Marcus Camby too, five players, that offer more value to the Celtics. I like the added lineup flexibility and quickness they provide over Darko. As well as their most established games. Better understanding of who they are as players.

I would only give strong consideration to Darko if Perkins left and the Celtics wanted to replace him with a defensive minded big burly center. I think Darko would flourish in that role and alongside all these veteran players who will be able to guide him (make his role very specific and limited to tasks he can do at a good level). In such a role, replacing Perk, Darko would be my top choice out of the centers.

As far as a backup 3, what about signing Michael Redd??

Assuming he's healthy by the time  of start of next season.

So essentially, if Marquis or Finley leaves, and we sign Redd.
Redd  would be replacing one of those guys.
