Have to say I am very happy with the play of McCourty at the corner and on special teams. He will have his rookie mistakes and give up the big play this year leaning his craft but he has All-Pro potential, Not this year and maybe not next. But eventually.

I've been pretty happy with his play as well.  But it would be nice to have a proven vet as one of the CBs.  McCourty and Butler makes me nervous...

I think Bill may make a move or two in that area before long ... he's been very positive with regards to Butler, but with Bodden down it's a whole different story. I like what I've seen of McCourtney, but he's inconsistent and seems to lack focus at times.

This should be an exciting season, with the Patriots' offense having to overcome the issues on defense.  Seems like there's a lot of parity at this point in the NFL overall.

Interesting cuts today (consolidating some stuff from another post):

Among the high profile cuts are Derrick Burgess and Pierre Woods.  Other cuts that might be surprising are Rich Ohrnberger (4th round choice last year), Sergio Brown (some people thought he had played exceptionally well, especially on special teams) and WR Sam Aiken.

The team has traded for LB Tracy White and Safety Jarrad Page.

With the trade for the safety, I've got to think that James Sanders is about to be traded for a position of need.

Also, Denver cut Jarvis Green, a former Pats player who could help at the DE.

EDIT--just read that S Brandon McGowan is out for the season, and that's one reason the trade for Jarrad Page occurred.  Wow, injury bug really hitting  the Pats....

Seems like injuries are a major problem for the Pats every year. I'm not even counting the Brady one or the Welker one; those are fluke plays that happen to every team. It just seems like New England loses major amounts of defensive depth every season.

So, question:
-Is this true or is it in my head because they're the team I follow closely;
-If true, does New England just have a terrible training staff?-
-Or is Bellichek just bad at evaluating durability?
-Or is one reason for Bellichek's seeming ability to find value because he takes players that other teams shy away from because they have durability questions, and this comes back to bite the Pats?

I don't think they have more durability problems than other teams.

This is the thing I find shocking.

Kyle Arrington, Dane Fletcher, and especially matt Slater making the team, but not Sam Aiken on all 4 special teams. Also both Pierre Woods and Eric Alexander are young with lots of special teams play and starts under their belts at a thin position, but both gone.
I'm also surprised at how fast they gave up on some offensive linemen. I admit Rich Ohrenburg wasn't great, but he's young and they traded up to get him. I'll be very interested to see the practice squad.

Also they're at 54 players cause one of the OLs is suspended a game. So one guy get's cut after week one (assuming nobody gets hurt). So they're kind of just keeping an extra guy for a week.

It's like maybe Belichek is trying to sneak guys onto the practice squad.

The Pats have claimed offensive tackle steve maneri from the texans.

Practice Squad So far:

1. Sergio Brown
2. Shawn Crable (Yup, he's back!)
3. Rich Ohrnberger
4. Darnell Jenkins
5. Steve Maneri

There are still 3 spots open but both Ted Larsen and Zac Robinson have been claimed off waivers.

I was glad to see Ohrnberger, Jenkins and Brown making it to practice squad.
We'll wee what Crable has to offer....

I'm still very interested in seeing whether the Pats make a move to bring back Jarvis Green.

Yeah, it would be good if he made it to the practice squad, just because you hate to see such a high draft pick get cut, and because he was dealing with injury all year last year.  On the other hand,  it really sounded like he didn't "get it" (from a football IQ point of view) during training camp and preseason games (based off of what I read from Mike Reiss and Albert Breer).

You hate to see such a high draft pick get cut...   but it's kind of a good thing, in a way.  Pats make mistakes with drafting, like every team, but don't hold onto their picks out of embarrassment or to try and prove themselves to be correct.  BB stresses to the rookies that where they were drafted, or even IF they were drafted, is irrelevant - and they've proven that with their actions.

So, high draft picks like McKenzie or Chad Jackson, if they aren't cut out for the Pats they aren't kept aboard.  More importantly, undrafted players like Brian Hoyer are given just as much of an opportunity to win a job as someone picked in the third or fourth round, and every season they seem to come away from camp having found at least one or two undrafted players who help.

So, if you're an undrafted player (like Hoyer a year ago)...  where are you most likely to sign?  It's going to be a team like the Pats, who prove every year that the rookies are all working off a clean slate, they ALL have to prove themselves and they'll all be given a chance to prove themselves.  That's got to help in convincing some of these undrafted players (many of whom get multiple camp invites) to go to camp with the Pats.

EDIT: Is Holt actually on the IR?  I thought he got an injury settlement, and therefore was technically a free agent?
