I've heard this dumb cliche over and over here. So where are they on the Cs? Could the Cs have Salmons? Could the Cs have Delfino? Then why don't they?
Yes, Boston could have had Salmons. They just didn't make an offer.
Yes, Boston could have gotten Carlos Delfino but they spent their MLE on Sheed instead + didn't have enough trade assets remaining to make Toronto an offer.
Yes, Boston could have signed Keith Bogans or Ime Udoka or several other wings to a minimum contract to shore up their wing depth but they showed no interest in bringing in another wing player with TA/Walker/Giddens already on the books.
Yes, Boston could have easily acquired better help on the wings. The reason they didn't was a lack of interest from Danny Ainge.
Delfino signed with the Bucks this summer. He would have been a great addition still, but has worked his way into Skiles' rotation.
Salmons would probably have been free for us for expirings, but don't know why an offer wasn't made
As for the original OP, QUALITY SFs aren't a dime a dozen.
There are more than plenty of SFs, but most of them are either undersized PFs that can't score, or oversized SGs that can't score. Gelabale, Udoka, maybe even Darius MIles.
I still feel Finley was a greater pickup because we don't necessarily needed a Pierce backup, but more of a SG/SF that could score. Pop in Finley next to NateRob, and put Tony or Daniels at the 3, and you got a perfect offensive combo.
The problem with this game was the starting unit. Ray touched the ball once in the first half was what I remember. Pierce didn't get started till late in 2nd quarter. Let this team mesh and I can see us still making a strong run for the money.
And remember, Doc did say that with little practice time left, he would have to use games like these as time for Finely and others to work their ways into the scheme.
