For those of us that only caught the box score, I am wondering how Nate looked last night.  I know he went 2 for 7 but was he getting his shots and just misssing them?  Did he run the point at all?  I would doubt it.  Any drives to the basket or mainly jump shots?  Did he have any discernible affect on NY's defensive strategy?  Did he blow by anyone?  Did he provide energy?  How about his defense.  Can he (did he) put pressure on the PG?

Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

He looked like a guy that didn't know any of the offensive sets and he wasn't used to the defensive rotations yet.  However, he seemed to be getting after it pressuring the ball and didn't look overly lost on offense.

My main criticism would be his being out of control a few times when driving into traffic.  Hopefully, that will correct itself once he figures out the floor spacing and knows more where his teammates are going to be.

It was a tough game for Nate, who didn't have any of the plays memorized and was improvising most of the time.  Also playing against his former team seemed to be a problem for him since they knew how to cover him pretty well.

Nate didn't bring the ball up much, but he did initiate the offense on several occasions, usually looking to penetrate and dish, but since he's not familiar with the team he was struggling to create for himself or others.  When he did look to score, it was almost all jump shots.  He started right of getting blocked twice and losing the ball on a fastbreak, and he seemed to have difficulty getting his shot over the defenders because of his size.

He was pressuring the ball up the floor for much of his playing time.  It didn't lead to much though, he's certainly fast enough but didn't seem aggressive enough to snatch anything away.

We also got a Rondo/Robinson sighting  for a few mins.  That was enjoyable to watch, but as Doc mentioned in his pst game comments, they don't yet know how to truly take advantage of that yet.

Overall, Nates demeanor was very sedate, and he spent much of the night trying to stay on the same page with his teammates.  If Nate is a meaningful addition to this team, time will be the key because he seemed pretty lost out there most of the night.

Like he was trying too hard. He'll get it.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Like he needs to spend some time with Rondo learning the art of the bounce pass. It seemed like the Knicks had an easy time deflecting his passes because they weren't high enough to get over the defender's reach. OTOH, it was the Knicks, so they know Nate's tendencies better than anyone else will.

without a doubt, he is far more athletic than eddie but looked more like giddens running around uncontrolled

I agree more with the original poster. I think he was really nervous to be playing, but I think it was just jitters that he'll be able to shake off. Giddens always gave you the feeling that he was just going through the motions/sets

you know how when KG got hurt, Obese Davis ended up getting most of his minutes?  You know how Obese was able to hit a few jumpers and people started saying he was "playing great" and "filling in admirably"?  ... you know how in reality, Obese was a poor rebounder and his stubby fat little arms were incapable of mimicking the length, speed and savvy of KG on the defensive end... and a lot of Boston fans were ignorant to the fact that replacing KG with a fat 2nd round draft pick destroyed the team despite his "big numbers"?

Well when I watched Nate yesterday and saw him buzzing around... trying to use his short stubby arms to be effective on defense and ultimately getting burned... I started thinking he'll be the point guard version of Obese Davis.  Someone who might put up some numbers, but will kill us if he ends up getting important minutes.

THat's just me, though.

He'll be a fun sideshow... kinda like watching some short fat guy play power forward.  But I'll never take a player serious who is 5'7 and my 5'4 asian friend was able to post up in a pickup game.

It was a very unimpressive debut.  I honestly thought Marbury's first game with us was more impressive.

I don't put much stock in it at all.  We'll know a lot more after a few weeks.  I you had no idea who the players were, or their reputations, and you evaluated Nate, House and Walker on the merits of the game last night, there wouldn't have been much to recommend any of them over the others.  Nate didn't look better than either Eddie or Walker, but then, like I said, I'm not making any evaluations based on this one showing.  That's just what it looked like last night.

About what someone would assume out of bench player playing his first game against his old team.

He played better than House so it's a start.

I agree with the poster that compared him to Davis.  They both bring a ton of talent and energy off the bench.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
My thoughts on Nate: He'll be okay, but part of the reason we went out there and got him is because he's such an emotional player. That gives him fire, but his confidence can't be sky high right now. Bill Walker in the game last night had better dunks than the one that won the dunk contest for him. Nate was benched for months. Now, he's going to a team thats in the hunt for the championship and is probably in his head being asked to singlehandledly score all the second unit's points.

Plus, he wants his new teammates to like him, so I doubt he's going to be 100% assertive from the jump.

If Nate is still playing like this in 3 games I will be worried but right now, I am okay with it.

I see what you are saying but in one instance, you an undersized PF taking over for a seven foot future HOF (not to mention the defensive captain).  On the other hand, you have an undersized guard who can shoot and drive taking over for a one dimensional shooter.  Robinson isn't a savior but of course, knowledgeable fans knew that already.  But what he is, is an upgrade over House; at least in terms of talent.  Whether he will fit is yet to be seen.  But at the least, I think the team got better.

... don't get me wrong.  Now we have a short fat guy (Obese), a midget (Nate), a guy who I've been convinced for years should be playing in the special olympics (tony allen... no offense... im just sayin... watch the guy shoot free throws), an albino ginger (Scal) and a certifiable headcase (Sheed) making up our bench... we're a Gheorghe Muresan away from completing our circus act of freakish nba reserves.   It'll be a fun stretch.

Edit:  That I got through all of that without remembering to mention Sheldon Williams is somewhat ironic.
