The Celtics are not a bad team. The record recently will say otherwise but we are definitely not bottom feeders or even a middle of the pack team. We are still a bench mark for other teams to measure themselves against. We will almost always get team's best effort.
Our biggest issue is chemistry, not off the court, but on it. At the beginning of this season player's roles changed more than people thought. Obviously it was a carry-over from last post season, but specifically the roles of Perk and more so Rondo have increased. In turn the roles of the big three have been reduced. Guys numbers are exemplified by the change in their role. For example, the big 3 are not asked to carry the offensive load as much, thus they get fewer shots, and decreased statistics.
If you have watched the games we go on stretches where we have great rhythm and then strectches where we don't. Typically in the third we come out flat because the rhythm is gone.
I think is a result of guys stepping outside of their role too often and trying to do it alone when we go on a tough stretch. At that point the peoblems typically comppund and it turns into a run for the other team. Let's face it. It isn't really the big three's job for one of them to take over the game at a given time anymore because as they have aged some of that ability is gone and we have enough weapons that selfish play is insane. When we move the ball and find the open man we play extremely well. Still we haven't had our full rotation all year and guys have probably been asked to be a little more selfish then we presently need them to be. This team fails more ofthen than not on a possession when less than four guys touch the ball.
Again this is a product of guys still getting situated with their roles because they have all fluctuated so much this year. Really only Pierce has had a consistent role as our go to guy.
Baby is adjusting from bench player to starterlast year to getting hurt to back to bench player this year.
Sheed has gone from sixth man to starter to back to bench more than once with the KG injury. He is a bench player for the first time in his career, and we shouldn't be surprised that it is taking him some time to again get readjusted to being a sixth man. His mintues haven't been consistent and it's hard to get a rhythm that way, remember he is predominately a stretch 4 now.
Kg right now is not the same player and is still adjusting mentally to understanding his limitations physically. He is no longer as much a feature on offense like he was in the past , some of that is his unwillingness to attack, and to me it has affected the starters at times. Still he can only improve assuming he remains healthy.
Perk and Rondo are both asked to do more than ever this year. They are being asked to become leaders. That is hard for young guys to do on a veteran team. Perk does not get consistent touches. When he is involved in the offense early in the game he is a completely different player the rest of the night. Rondo is asked to lead and then defer more than anyone. That cant be easy for a 23 year old guy. It's not really surprising why he is inconsistent at times.
House had been asked to play the two coming into this year and the bench got acclimated to playing with Marquis as the one. Then that all changed for nearly thirty games. The bench has always had issues with House at the one. That is why we got Steph and Sam. Now with Quise back we are seeing better play. The bench should continue to improve and that will be important to cut guys minute's back.
All in all we are playing better ball. We have to look at this the way Cleveland and Orlando had to look at their rosters in the beginning of the year. They had to have patience for chemistry and acclimation to roles.
Once we get our chemistry on track we will finish the season strong. This team honestly seems to be better on the road so homecourt isn't a big deal anymore. The big deal is being ready for the playoffs and playing good ball in April.
That will only happen with consistency due to health and also each player haveing a better understanding of what thier actual role is. We haven't had any of that all year and we are 14 games above .500 after playing all but four games total against the combination of Cleveland LA Orlando and Atlanta.
Have hope guys. As time goes on we will finish games stronger. Doc is an underrated coach. He is a leader and the veterans respect him. No coach in the NBA can demand veteran stars to do whatever he wants. Look at Pop, Phil, and Carlisle. They have all been just as inconsitent. So Doc is honestly doing a decent job considering the inconsistency of available guys do to injuries.
I look for the Celtics to go on a run no later than March. I hope I am right.
