With owners looking to cut players compensation drastically. I seriously doubt the Celtics will add more salary when there is no guarantee it would make us any better.

If we don`t trade Ray we are done until 2012, when KG and Sheed expire...and after that probably a few years of rebuilding, so it will be while before we can win a ring again...sad but true...

Perhaps.  If we *do* trade Ray for a non-elite talent, we're definitely done next year.  If we don't trade him, at least there's a chance we could contend next year.
How, by adding a MLE player to the group that includes the further declining KG, PP, Sheed, and Ray if we resign him?  That's not going to make us contenders, in my view.

If our core is that bad, what does trading Ray for a non-elite talent get us?

Celtics need either a fringe all-star or guys in their last years that will improve the teams chances this year.

Otherwise, the Celtics need to just keep Ray.

It jumpstarts the rebuild.  Replace Ray with Iggy, Martin, or Ellis (if indeed one of those trades would be possible), then you've obviously got a better player going forward.  You could trade our big expirings for players as they expire.  That's one approach to building.  The other, is to let our Old 3 + Sheed expire and simply add via MLE (more non-elite talents).  Basically, allow them to expire in their time and become truly pathetic in the process.

So, it's either replace them as they expire, and hope the new guys they bring in gel with Rondo and Perk as a new core to build upon, or let the Old 4 expire, and surely become completely irrelevant.  I'm hoping Danny goes the replace them as they expire route.  He has personal experience with the keeping stars well into their decline method.

Only Martin fits a need.

Ellis and Rondo is not a future backcourt that says "champ".  It screams 50+ wins in the regular season team that always fails to go as far in the playoffs.

AI2 is a nice thrid player.  But he is being payed like a star.  He is not.  He would hurt the Celtics long term chances, especially if NBA money drops.

Martin is a NBA star with a good contract.

I think it's pretty clear now that bringing back Ray under any circumstances (barring the highly unlikely major resurgence during the playoffs) would just be a waste of time and money.

It's not that he's done a bad job. It's that he's a major part of a major under-achieving team that is waaayyy over the hill.

I mean if we're going to keep him maybe we should try to bring back McHale, Cousy, and Bill R.

We can be the all-geezer team.

It's just not practical.

I'm trying to watch the game, but my eyes are bleeding

Yep, I'm leaning in the same direction.

I'm not interested in bringing back Ray Allen at this point.
