Nice trade. I think Young is the better player now and will be in the future as well. Randolph is a nice potential piece, but the Pacers got the better of this one for now. Also, Young is a way better fit with his new team, who can now move odom to PF and start Thad alongside him.
I like Randolph's defensive/rebounding potential better. He has the skillset to become a Lamar Odom type player, Young has a lower ceiling. Also a shot blocking 4 is very important if I'm going to keep Al Jefferson.

I don't like giving up a prospect of Randolph's caliber ... not for that type of a package.

I would have only traded Randolph for an All-NBA player/talent under the age of 27. Nothing less.

That is a big loss for Indiana and an excellent acquisition for Minnesota.

Agreed -- very good potential fit down the road.

Right, but Slugger already had Odom, and Young is more proven and has shown that he can play in a non-Nellieball system. I think you're being too generous for Randolph, too. He's versatile, but entirely inconsistent and disappears in big situations.

I got to watch him a lot when I was at Vanderbilt, and his abilities came through in flashes, but he was unable to string it together. It's been more of that in pros. I think Young is the more consistent player and better fit, while Randolph is the home run pick.
CB Draft Bucks: Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Tobias Harris, Zach LaVine, Aaron Afflalo, Jeff Green, Donatas Motiejunas, Jarrett Jack, Frank Kaminsky, Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee, Shane Larkin, Nick Young

DKC Bucks. Also terrible.

Right, but when you're dealing with 20 and 21 year old players don't you want the higher ceiling?

Besides I don't think the Nellie Ball system has helped Randolph, his minutes have been jerked around like crazy and he's been asked play a lot of different positions.

Agreed -- Nellie has hindered Randolph's development.

Thanks, Champ.  It was based on need...i put the feelers out there for Randolph, but there werent any bites greater than Thad Young.  I think people are put off by the fact he's injured, and the fact he plays in GS.  For whatever reason, most GSW players tend to have, what are viewed as, inflated stats.

I like Randolph, and think he will make an really good pro one day. I guess i liken it to when Portland gave up on J O'neal, i dont like the idea of waiting 5 years for him to realise his potential.

New Orleans selects Ian Mahinmi?  I know nothing about the guy but the Spurs usually have a good eye for talent.

Besides I don't think the Nellie Ball system has helped Randolph, his minutes have been jerked around like crazy and he's been asked play a lot of different positions.

Development wise I'll buy your point, but as far as statistically I think he tends to get overrated because of the Nellieball effect - though I could be wrong. I think since Young has shown the greater consistency through his career, along with a high ceiling, I think it's an even swap. Young's ceiling is a 2-3 time all-star, his basement is a solid starter for a decade. Randolph's ceiling is a few 2nd/3rd team all-NBA selections (multiple ASGs included), but his basement is rotation player with a lesser chance of longevity.

Randolph's a gamble - a relatively safe one, but the uncertainty remains. Young is less of that. Because of the risk involved, I think the players are on the same level this year. It's a volatile assessment based on their play so far, and could swing next year - but that's how I see it.
