Wow...that's quite a trio with Beckett, lester, and Lackey. Didn't Lackey hate Boston though?

Something tells me we've seen the last of Jason Bay.

I wonder if this could also lead to a trade for Adrian Gonzales

Buchlotz, Ellsbury, + pieces for Adrian Gonzales

I'm thinking the same thing.  One way or another, Bucholtz isn't long for Boston methinks.

This would be a great move IMO, and I sure hope it happens (especially if the 5th year is a team option).

While Lackey is not a true Ace, he is a workhorse, and incredibly consistent, and he has had postseason success.

A deal like this also opens up some other really interesting questions.

First, what do they do with Beckett?  He would need a contract similar, if not bigger than Lackey's.  Would they give it to him, or is Lackey ultimately his replacement, to help bridge the gap until Bucholtz or Kelly are ready to step up as the second Ace of this team with Lester?

Second, does this open up any deals for Bucholtz?  Without Lackey, you could argue that its very risky to deal Bucholtz for a bat, because he is an important part of the rotation.  But with Lackey, Bucholtz would just be the 4th or 5th starter (depending on what happens with Dice-K), and suddenly it becomes much easier to send him out in a deal for a big bat.  Now, I think they would be hesitant to do this if they can't resign Beckett, but if he is locked up, they may let Buch go, since they have their top 3 locked up long term, and they have Kelly only a couple years away.

And finally, will this put the final nail in the coffin for Jason Bay returning?  Sure, they could afford Bay if they really want to, but I am being more and more convinced that they are not enamored with him enough to give him the kind of money he is asking for.  And with adding Lackey (and maybe a raise to Beckett), perhaps they will let him go, get a defensive guy to play left and (or first), and try to win with dominant pitching and defense.  Then try to roll the money they would have paid Bay or Holliday to when there may be much better players in a year or two.

The Lackey deal is supposedly 5 years 85 million according to Jon Heyman, alot but the fact that it hurts the Angels ontop of helping us makes it better. I like Clay alot, and think he may actually have a similar, if not lower ERA than Lackey next, but Lackey is a proven workhorse and if this allows us to trade a package around Buchholz/Kelly/2 B prospects for A-Gon then im all for it. I also heard that the Red Sox are trying to work out an extension with Josh Beckett so they can keep the core of the rotation around for awhile.

Also Ken Rosenthal and Jon Heyman are saying Roy Halladay is in Philadelphia with his agent and Heyman says a deal is at hand. Cliff Lee told the Phillies he wouldnt get them a discount, and supposedly Halladay indicated he may be willing to sign a extension for cheaper than what Johan did with the Mets. That deal makesm e happy because it means the Yanks or Angels cant get Roy.

Don't get my hopes up.  Hamels, Lee and Halladay?  That's just to much of a dream.

My fault for not being clear, its a 3 team deal where Lee would be dealt away as part of the package. People are speculating that the 3rd team in either the Angels or the Mariners.

Roy Halladay is in Philadelphia and may be a Phillie soon, according to major-league sources.

A three-team blockbuster that would send Halladay to the Phillies and Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee to another club is under discussion, sources say.

Why mess with a good thing if you're the Phillies?  I think they'd be better off just re-signing Lee.

Jon Heyman of SI said the Phillies went to Lee about an extension and he said he wont take any discount and is looking for a huge deal. So instead of risking losing him for nothing after this year they figured they can get Halladay without giving up the farm, and sign him to a rpetty reasonable extension.

They upgrade the pitching next year and set the price the next few seasons.  I can understand that.

I still hope they can pull it off without Lee being involved.

Hate to make another post, but it seems Halladay has been traded to the Phillies, Lee to the Mariners, and prospects to the Blue Jays.

I think Ellsbury is kinda overrated, but i wouldnt trade him +Buchholz for A-Gon because there would be a huge hole in CF. If there was a good FA CF out there id do it in a heartbeat but there isnt, nor do they have any CF prospects close to the Majors. Kalish and Redick can play CF but are really more of corner OF's.

Doesnt matter anyways, Ellsbury isnt part of the trade talks between the teams, the Padres supposedly want Buchholz, one of Westmoreland/Kelly, then a couple other good prospects. Now that they signed Lackey i'd probably be willing to do it, and if they had to choose to keep one of Kelly/Westmoreland id choose Westmoreland. Kelly probably has #2 starter upside where Westmoreland is compared to Grady Sizemore, and is VERY polished for his age so he is closer to the majors than most his age.

$17 million for Lackey seems crazy, but I guess that's the market.  I would have preferred that the money be spent to upgrade the offense, but we'll see what shakes out.
