In Hindsight, Should The C's Have Done The Amare Stoudamire Trade?

The proposed trade this summer was Rondo + Ray for Barbosa + Amare , and I think Danny should have done it. At the time I was actually in favor of this trade( this isn't an I told you so post, just stating a fact).

This team is just full of jump shooters. KG cant finish inside as nearly asgood as before because of the knee, Sheed just sits out on the 3 point line because he is old and fat , and even PP hardly ever takes the ball inside to post up anymore. The only one who has a low post offensive game is Perk and that isn't even great because he never passes out of the post.


1)Rondo For Amare

The C's could have gotten one of the top 5 low post scorers in the game to team up with Perk for the next 10+ years. Just imagine having a top 5 low post offensive player and a top 5 low post defensive player on the same team. This would be a great duo to build around after PP and KG are done. In my opinion it is alot easier to rebuild with a stud offensive post player in place rather than Rondo( who doesnt even seem to be defending anymore since he got that big contract and has no offensive game to speak of besides drive to the basket)


2) Ray for Barbosa

Barbosa is one of the best sg's in the league off the bench. While he is not Ray Allen in his prime, neither is Ray Allen of the current time. Ray is only going to get older and slower, while Barbosa is only 26 years old and has plenty of time to get better. He is already one of the best 3 point shooters in the league and has the ability to play both PG and SG


3) We Still Could Have Contended This Year

With a rosterlineup of:

PG: VET FA( MLE instead of Sheed)/ Daniels
SG: Barbosa                      / House
SF: PP                           / Scal
PF: KG                           / BBD
 C: Stoudamire                   / Perk

We could still have a very good team. I admit the starting PG position would be a bit of a concern, but there are way to fill that void. Who knows if Andre Miller migh have taken the MLE if he had a chance to join a stacked C's team. Mike Bibby even?


I just don't think this current C's can beat a stacked Lakers team with a primarily jump shooting offense. The team with Stoudamire and Barbosa might not be able to either but at least we would have been at pretty much the same talent level with the ability to rebuild much more quickly if this indeed the end of KG and the big 3 as we knew it..

There was no reason to do that trade at the time IMO. There was no need to break up a team who almost made it to the ECF without their best player.

Too bad there was no way of knowing how pitiful we'd be this season. Otherwise, i'd probably do that trade in a heart beat.

I don't think there was any truth to that particular rumor.  Even if there was, we might arguably win the talent battle, but our roster would be horribly mismatched.  Who is the veteran free agent we would have signed?  Jason Williams?  Bibby and Miller got more money elsewhere, and I doubt they would have taken less here.

I agree. I'm open to at least discussing lots of possibilities, but that one hurts team balance. Same reason that I don't like a Ray for Kirilenko swap, unless it's expanded to include a real shooting guard as well.

I agree that he is not a low post player compared to shaq in his prime, but in todays NBA he is . When he faces the basket at least he attacks it and goes to the rim. Besides PP we hardly ever see that from our front line ...

No deal, due to the talent imbalence.  Perk is a solid starting center, period.  Does Amare come off the bench?  No...  KG?  No...  Bad idea.

That said, with talented scorers at the 2, 3, and 4, a scoring PG is not necessary, and we could do well with a solid journeyman level PG instead of a superstar.  Last summer there were some good ones available, but they were restricted.  I think the MLE could have netted a choice of Sessions or Felton, either of whom could do the job we need done, I think, but would be a touch overpaid at that amount.

BTW, Sheed does look a little "thick", eh?  Did his conditioning lax since he wasn't training for 35 min/night?  Wonder what he'll look like at the end of his deal...

Amare is strictly a 4 and a poor defensive one at that.  You couldn't get away with a KG-Amare frontline against Cleveland, Orlando or LA.  If you think KG is wobbly now, just imagine how broken down he'd be fighting O'Neal, Howard and Bynum for post position 20-30 minutes a game.

And Barbosa is not a PG.  We'd be forced to run the offense through Pierce and Ray all game.

Perk and Rondo may be extremely frustrating for their offensive limitations, but they are supremely important to the Celtic's success.  They bust their tails doing everything the Big 3 can't or don't have energy for. Of course when the big 3 look old and feeble, it's nice to imagine what Barbosa and Amare could have done to pick up the offensive slack, but I don't think it work out nearly as well over the long-haul.
