Charles Barkley was just on PTI. He was asked to give his opinion on the possibility of retiring Jordan's number. His answer was flat out "No". Charles said if anybody deserves to have their number retired it is Bill Russell because he did so much more for the game.

Good to hear Charles say that. He was already one of my favorite analysts but now I'm even more convinced.

He also said that Bird and Magic saved the NBA, so it sounds like he has more respect for them, too...glad to see not everyone is in love with Jordan...

Michael Jordan said himself that he doesn't deserve it yesterday on the Ahmad show on the NBA channel.  He said that others, like Bird, Magic, Stockton deserves it and that no one is bigger than the sport itself.  He also mentioned Bill Russel as one of the All Greats.

Yep.

But Lebron's comments about Jordan (and his number) don't show that he's in love with him, they show that he's in love with himself.

Now it's football.... Just shut up and play hard until you win a championship, kid.

This is about right. Yeah, Jordan probably was the 'best player ever', but I dunno about the retirement of his number thing. It definitely has more to do with Lebron than MJ anyway.

Of course.

He is talking about a league wide retirement.

It was pretty funny on Leno when he was like "So Charles? Lebron's MJ idea. Good idea? Bad idea?"

And Barkley was like "well I think it's an idea"

and then he went on to say the only player that should be retired league wide is Bill Russell.

He obviously reads the threads here

Do you personally believe that the number 23 should be retired across the league? If Bill Russel who really did much more for the NBA on and off the court, along with Red, doesn't deserve it no one does.

Charles is right, of course.  Bill Russell is not only the biggest winner of all-time, but he was also a pioneer.

For an Auburn guy, he occasionally makes sense.   ;)

It shows he doesn't watch classic games on NBA TV. He is young and probably doesn't have a great knowledge of NBA history. He is no KG, a true student of the game.

I can't help but like Lebron though. He's like Shaq without the venom. He is playful and relatively open with the press, but he doesn't badmouth anyone. I think he needs a better coach though who can impose a real system on offense. Lebron's skill level can make it easy for a coach to get lazy. It took guts for Doc to force Pierce to modify his game early on so that he could get easier scoring opportunities, but it make Pierce a better fit when we got a complete team. You know Doc would have the guts to rein in Lebron.
