when the chant started, lets be honest....it was in a sarcastic way bc he was a "goofy white guy" that was considered a scrub.

however, over the years, i think the chant has transformed into a term of endearment.
I agree that many mean it in support of Scal from just being at games where it has happened, but it's truly getting old.  Scal actually contributes when on the floor without wowing anyone.  This is the kind of thing that should be reserved for Sweetney.

I agree with DL totally. However, I don't think it should be reserved for Sweetney AT ALL. His dad died and he overate to try and control the pain he felt. That's not something to mock, especially when its clear he has really good low post skills. I actually hope he makes the team and works of the 30 lbs that Donny estimated he needs to lose. I'd love to see his life NOT be derailed by a tragedy.

I don't think it has as much to do with being the goofy white guy, as much as being the perceived worst player on the team.  When the Celtics are going well their crowds have always gone a little goofy for the scrub (is Scal "the scrub" is another debate, but that's certainly the way he is perceived by the people doing the chanting).

I can remember Deurod chants (though he had the added advantage of having a name that started with an OOOOOO sound - which we all know is utterly (cow pun intended) irresistable to sound out loudly)...Conner Henry...Jeff Judkins...Hell, even Greg Kite to a degree...Charles Bradley.

I think there's just an irritating slant toward what's trendy with a large part of the Celtics crowd now.  The crowd does what feels good, more than what's necessarily good for the team.  For whatever reason the Scal thing still has legs.

Then again it just might be the perfect storm or perceived scrub and amiable goofy white guy, redhead, chunky fellah etc...

Yup

Liked for the wrong reasons. I believe the fans truly like him, but it's because he's the chubby goofy redhead whiteguy. Not because of anything he's actually done on the court.

scal over baby

playoff run baby improved as he played

what if Scalabrine got more time on the wood....

scal already has a release like bird~

I feel like you were laughing hysterically while typing this post. I honestly can't tell if you like Scal or if your comments about him are all sarcastic.

To be fair Scal didn't stink as much post concussion when he was actually hitting open shots.

I think Scal is just taking over our last "beloved scrub" role, the famous Walter McCarty.

He wasn't very good.  He was a goofy tall guy that could shoot 3's, but he always hustled hard and played his heart out.  Scal is not as goofy while playing, but he could be considered more goofy-looking.  Either way, I am not a big fan of the chants.  It does feel like mocking the guy.

If you are paying good money to sit in those seats as long as it isn't nasty or cursing or extremely hateful, say and chant whatever you want. I for one would like to see all non-celtic fans keep their pie holes shut in our building however that isn't going to happen either. Scal's a man being paid huge bucks to play a game and I think he can handle it.

Why would you be ok with our "fans" doing a chant that hurts our team?  He has publicly said he doesn't like the chant, and that it DOES affect his game (regardless of whether you think is 'should' affect his game).  I hate donny marshall more than anything connected to the celtics, but he hit the nail on the head with his comment.  The chant should go.

If you look at Scalabrine’s Shooting Percentage Splits from Home vs. Road games, I think they’re telling. Last year he was a much more efficient player on the road.

2008-2009   FG%   3PT%   FT%
Home       37%   37%   67%
Road      49%   44%   100%

I have to note that the opposite is the case in previous seasons (his percentages are better at home). However, I don’t think it’s helping his performance and I honestly believe that he prefers playing on the road because of the chant.

I’m a season ticket holder and I hate it. I think is has a lot to do with the fact that he’s white. I’ll tread carefully here, but I think 90% of the people chanting “Scal-a-brine!” are white kids 30 years old or younger, and half of those people are wasted. It’s a stupid chant and I cringe every time I hear it.

I hate the chant!!! Scals doing his best out there. We can talk all day about how he doesn't deserve his contract or he's not athletic. It doesn't matter because when he's on the court he's playing for our team...our home fans should support him.

The sarcastic scal chant should stop because as posters have said, he said he doesn't like it in an interview. And let's not say fans chant because they appreciate him, because no one goes crazy when anyone else touches the ball. No ones yelling "shoot!"

I like Scal.  I hope that when he retires, we offer him a front office positon.

Because you are misunderstanding who the customer is in this scenario. WE are the one's who are paying their salaries, not the other way around. As long as I am not being extremely offensive where I am ruining another paying customers experience then I am free to shout whatever I like. If Scal doesn't like it then he can quit and go take a job where no one will shout his name out. Until then man up.

I didn't see anyone those last few weeks too upset at the things they were shouting at Pitino.

Keep in mind I have long been one of Scal's ardent defenders and would personally never chant at him if he didn't want me to, however I defend the ticket holders right to do what they want!

It's annoying.  How would you like it if 30,000 fans were chanting your name because of how goofy you look every time you're in the game/touch the ball/get an open look?

To those that say Scal is a scrub- look at what he did in New Jersey.  He was a solid role player until we tried to make him sprint up and down the court in an up tempo offense.  And he did well last year if I remember correctly when he was a starter.

I think it is disrespectful to him and embarrassing to think that our fans would still do this, but I think this is a small case since the game was played in Connecticut.  I haven't really heard the "chant" like that at the Garden for a while, so I'm gonna chalk that one up to "Connecticut, home of John Mayor and wannabee Yankee fans."

If the chant makes him miss shots, you are being detrimental to this teams success, and thus ruining my experience.

I think it is kinda like the way Notre Dame cheered when Rudy got a sack. Is that wrong?

It also fits evenly into that nice rhythm.  I liked the "You're not Rick-ey" done to the same rhythm by the Davis season ticket section. This was usually done when an opponent was shooting a free throw. We lol'd every time.

The chant is okay for a laugh but I always feel bad for the other players who are out there in the final minutes trying to get their shot.  They get the final 90 seconds to impress the coaching staff and it becomes all about Scal...

If you're out there in cyberspace, and you think it is even the tiniest bit cool to mock Scal, then you are an idiot.

Grow up.  Treat people with respect.

The team would likely play better without all the pressure of having fans in the stands at all, so why don't we just have them tell us who won when it is all over…

Please. If you think that Scal is missing shots because people are chanting his name you're crazy. There are a lot more pressing things causing them to lose games.

How about since it's tough to park and tough to see from your nosebleed seats we should all just let you up in the front row and give you free valet so that it doesn't interfere with your experience. Anything else you'd like?!
