Bill Walton + Arvydas Sabonis would be my #1 and #2 choices.

I haven't seen enough Bill Russell games but I reckon he'd be in the top five too. Wilt Chamberlain definitely deserves to be.

After that, I'm not sure who the final guy would be. There's a lot of guys who come to mind but that don't necessarily separate themselves from the pack.

I'm surprised that Shaq hasn't been mentioned more, considering some of the other names that have been mentioned, Shaq was/is a fabulous passer out of the low post.

Gotta vote for Sabonis.  He didn't enter the league until he was 31 (by which time he had already peaked).  To judge him solely on his NBA career reminds me of when people who were only old enough to have seen the tail end of Larry Bird's career rate guys like Kobe Bryant, Oscar Robertson or Wilt Chamberlain as better players because they never saw him at his best.

Another vote for Sabonis.  There were other good passing centers, but IMHO he was by far the best.

I can't believe that Dave Cowens has been left out of the discussion.  He averaged 3.8 assists for his career.  I wouldn't put him number one, but hard to argue he isn't in the top 5. Check out his stats for those who have forgotten. Walton is my pick for the best.

Alvin Adams was a good passer, but he was really a pf playing out of position (so was Cowens, really).  Connie Hawkins was also a good passer who sometimes played center, and Wes Unseld was a great outlet passer.

Even so, Sabonis was better than them all.

The best passing center I've seen in college was Chris Thomforde at Princeton.

You can't believe that Cowans isn't in the discussion. What about Bill Russell? He had more passes that led to fastbreak points than just about any center ever. Let alone he had 4,100 career assist. On a team with Bob Cousy not to mention the rest of the guys on those teams were geat jumpshooters. Those Russell teams ran every chance they got and Bill was often the last guy up the court. He was on a loaded team and still managed to have over 21 thousand rebounds and I bet 18 thousand of those rebounds led to fastbreak baskets, 4,100 assists just imagine if he was the focal point on offence on a weaker team what his stats would be.
I realize most here are too young to see Bill play but the teams he was on would give Dr. James Naismith a big STIFFY. For this CELTICS BLOG site to not mention him every time we talk about the BEST Center anything is unforgiveable.  Bill Russell's name is'nt mentioned till the 3rd page when I bring it into light and it's is just WRONG. I will let it slide this time but you've been warned.  ;D

Again, with threads like these, what is "best"?

I have already stated my opinion earlier, but does "best" mean most fundamentally sound, most effective in terms of points/opportunities produced, or does it mean most "flashy"/creative?  Is it a combination of the three?

Can we add a poll to the OP?  We can all debate ad nauseam (perhaps literally) - so why don't we vote on it and see what the consensus is?
