I think Ariza is a bigger loss than Powe, but I think Artest is a more valuable replacement for them than Rasheed is for us.  That's simply because our front court is already pretty set with Perk and KG (and Davis off the bench), whereas their SF position has been in the air the past two years.
Rasheed is a ton better than BBD. I think the moves are comparable. Our first bench big was up in the air both years. Baby did well stepping in for KG but he's still only an average bench PF. Which is a to say a below average PF overall. Rasheed is a starting caliber PF or C in the league still.

I agree that SHeed is better that Artest BUT,...

LAL lose Ariza and get Artest for lose change in the couch.
LA has Odom,Walton and Artest to play SF so they are deep

BOS loses Powe and gets Sheed to play C. We got Sheed and Perk and SHELDON to play C. We're an injury away from a repeat season of last year

We still need a PG(lost Marbury to insanity from too many bench minutes to an egotistic washed up allstar) and we need a SF
Can't stop, Rondo!

The point I'm trying to make is, no matter how much better Rasheed is than Davis, we'll still upgrading a bench player.  I never minded having to choose between Powe or Davis to come off the bench.
At least now LA has a solid starter, and they still have depth in the wings.  Plus they really needed more D in the starting line-up.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Ariza played with heart and Odom played for a contract. Together, they were a wrecking ball for the Lakers in '09 playoffs. Now, with Ariza gone and Odom given a full contract, the Lakers are done. Odom, I repeat, doesn't care for Kobe's team; he's in it for the paycheck. BTW, Odom is the Laker's second most talented player but he just doesn't care enough to fulfill his potential.

Artest, being the bad wild card that he is, will simply bring on the ire of refs and perhaps, give our frontline some flagrant fouls (and a few fistfights) along the way but all and all, the Lakers will not be their '09 self this coming season.

wishful thinking anyone?

I love how we go so far as to become player psychologists to find out faults in other teams.
