I guess I never realized how people though about the southeast before today

How do you mean? As in you didn't think they had 2 playoff teams, or you didn't think any team in the southeast was better than the top 3 teams in the atlantic?

How do the votes get calculated?

Average order of finish? 15 points for 1st, 14 for 2nd, etc.?

same basic thing but just curious

The second one makes the most sense to me.

I mean I thought they had 2 playoff teams but Im seeing a good amount of people keeping Washington out which I dont agree with.

Average order of finish and the points plan would have the same results, wouldn't they?

If you look through that press conference, you will see a few that said this and the reasons why.

Here's my brief thoughts with how I voted:
1. Chicago
2. Orlando
3. NJ
4. Toronto
5. Philly
6. Boston
Top 6 teams could really be in any order.  I don't think the Atlantic teams are built to have the best regular season record, and will beat each other up more (I think teams in the Atlantic play each other 4 times,  NJ for instance will only play Chi and Orl 3 times if I looked at the 2010 schedule correctly).  Chicago and Orlando are top of their divisions easily in my opinion though, anybody can come out of the Atlantic.

7. NY
8. Cleveland
9. Washington
I could really see these 3 teams going in any direction and I debated with myself for a while over this.  Also I wouldn't be surprised to see Cleveland and Washington prove me wrong and do much better, as I think both have very good teams.  I kind of view it like the West playoff the last couple of years, where a team with 48 and 46 wins was left out of the playoffs.

10 Detroit - not a big fan of Detroit's makeup.  Amare is not a leader in my book.  I don't think Rudy Gay is either.  OJ Mayo is a headcase waiting to happen.  I just don't see this team running smoothly.

11 Indiana - 2 key players overseas hurts.  Not sure Gilbert is going to come through, but Battier, Igoudala, and Aldridge should make them respectable.  Playoffs aren't out of the question.

12  Milwaukee - maybe next year Durant.

13 Atlanta
14 Miami/Cuba
15. Charlotte
All the bottom of the barrell.  Atlanta with the veterans should be able to win more games, and Miami/Cuba is more NBA ready than Charlotte.  Charlotte definitely looks like they're rebuilding, but if you are Blake Griffin isn't a bad way to go.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

If we do the average vs the multiply then tally, its different.

Isn't that assuming that some teams are missing votes?  The average would just be the tally before it was divided by the number of votes.  So though the numbers are different, the rankings would be the same.

Does that make sense?  Giving points for each ranking will work out the same as taking the average.  If the points awarded for each ranking are linear (15 for 1st, 1 for 15th), then the points awarded lineup will have the same order as the average.

It makes sense to me.  Whether a first place vote counts for "1", or whether it counts for "15", you're still going to get the same thing.  If you go with an average, you just add up all the numbers and divide by the number of votes, and the lowest averages is the 1st place winner, etc.  If you assign points to a vote, you add up all the votes, and the person with the highest raw score is the lst place seed.  It should be the exact same result either way.

Thanks Roy.  I'd been working with DataFerrett all day, so numbers have been spinning in my head and I wasn't sure if I was making sense.
