Odom is going back to the Lakers. It is a foregone conclusion. No one out there who can offer him enough $$ that the Lakers won't match.  They are determined to get more championships, and know how important he is to there chances of repeating.

I woldnt be so sure. Lakers are heavily in luxury tax land. If someone offers odom a 10 million per yr deal the lakers are essentially paying him a max contract if they match due to the dollar for dollar penalty they will pay.

No one has 10 million in cap space to even offer him such a deal.

Totally agree with you, thats why earlier in the thread we were discussing how teams (like Dallas) could get far enough under the cap to offer him such a deal

Quote
Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said tonight he was "not as hopeful" of re-signing unrestricted free agent Lamar Odom "as I was Friday." Asked why, Kupchak said, "It's just a feeling you get. You have conversations with the player's representative and, right now, I'm not sure we're on the same page." Asked during halftime of the Lakers-Clippers summer league game, if he was the point of throwing up his hands in frustration, Kupchak said, "Perhaps." Kupchak said he had no further plans to talk with Odom's agent, Jeff Schwartz. "I understand it's a process. I am surprised it's taken us so long to get to this point." Los Angeles Daily News

But what pieces would they give to move Dampier? To get under the cap by giving up a big contract like that you need to give up assets or take back salary. They can't take back salary and gain cap space, so what player should Dallas trade for cap space? Also I don't think just shedding Dampier's salary would be enough to give Dallas enough cap room, take a look.

They got rid of Stackhouse but added Kidd and Marion. That means they are over the cap by a lot. The cap is 57.7 million, so they'd need to dump more than Dampier's 12 million to get down to that number.

I defended Portland not going after Odom, and I agree with the OP that it's a smart move for Dallas to go after Odom. He fits for a team with a short window and veterans who aren't impressionable. That's Dallas, not Portland.

I don't think the Mavs will get him in the end, because I think LA will go above the MLE to get him. The sticking point has been Odom wanting eight figures, which nobody can give him except LA - and if nobody else can give it to him, why compete with yourself?

I've thought all along that Odom will take a 3 or 4 year, $7.5 mil a year contract. But maybe Dallas can steal him by throwing 5 at the midlevel.

It's not "ideal" for Dallas but it gives them a very interesting lineup. They start Kidd, Howard, Marion, Dirk and Damp, with Terry and Odom off the bench, and probably close with Kidd, Terry, Marion or Howard, Dirk and Odom. It actually could work against a lot of teams. There really aren't a ton of strong post players in the league, and they could create some matchup nightmares. Of course, they'd be relying at the end of games on Odom for inside toughness, which isn't the best idea. And there's a lot of potential for problems with playing time when they have questionable character guys like Marion and Odom. But for Dallas, it's worth the risk. They went all in for this year, Odom is clearly their best option left.
Go Celtics.

I just found the last part of the piece of news :

"...whose negotiations with Los Angeles are going slowly. But Odom is not likely to sign anywhere for the mid-level that the Mavericks now, again, have at their disposal; he's accepted that he'll face a pay cut from last year's $14 million, but doesn't want to go down that much."

Doesn't sound like Odom would sign with the Mavs but at least he isn't near anything with L.A.

Pritchard should've looked at him. Milsap makes no sense there

Mark Cuban can be an idiot, yet this is a great move.

Well, Dallas could add on some years at the end of the deal too. Some creativity could land Odom in Dallas..

It always sounded like the Blazers would have been just as happy if the Jazz matched and were forced to move Boozer. They must have some sort of plan involving that possibility.

Brilliant move Mark Cuban, elevate L.O.'s price that
Mitch Kupchak would have to pay him.

This is going to be Lamar's last big money contract,
after this contract expires and he's still a serviceable
player - contracts for the LLE will be what he'll make.

Lamar, take Mark Cuban's offer and leave LA.  Cost of living
in TX is less than CA.  Dirk needs a new wingman on and off
the court, and I think his game will fit in well there.

Why doesn't Cuban just build Odom a beach in Dallas?
