A few weeks ago I made my pitch and crafted a formal campaign for Sheed (http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=29559.msg517135#msg517135)...

Now that he's signed, all the Sheed fans have finally made it out of the woodwork (Jeff, took you a while bud) on this bright and sunny day to celebrate the beginning of one of the best seasons ever played by a team in the NBA.

Fun storylines to follow this year:

  • 72 wins.  The record set by the 96 Bulls has never more been in jeopardy.  On paper, this team could be arguably the most talented ever assembled.  Just imagine how much fun these guys are going to have playing basketball this year.  Think Ubuntu on steroids.
  • The Big 4.  The big 3 have officially expanded.  Sheed is in no way the outcast with this group.  There's a reason that KG, Ray, and Paul all showed up for the press conference (initiation for the new guy).  Now all we need is a more clever name.
  • NBA Calls the Playoffs...due to the new slaughter rule.  The rest of the NBA will eventually become uninterested in playing after the Celtics prove to be unstoppable. David Stern will finally put and end to the madness and award the Trophy in May.
  • Doc picks up smoking. A la Red, expect to see Doc picking up a fine affection for Cuban cigars this offseason and translate his game to the court come October.
  • Heinsohn moves in.  While I was recruiting people for the Sheed bandwagon, Tommy Heinsohn was at the wheel driving it.  The big 4 will unquestionably gel like Vaseline, but no one will become closer this season than Sheed and Tommy.  Expect these two to play off each other like Romeo and Juliet.  Imagine the scenario...Sheed gets whistled for a foul, looks to Heinsohn who gives him the "bullsh** call nod," blows up on the ref and gets tossed.  Tommy simultaneously blows a gasket joins Sheed in the tunnel to harass the refs on their way out.  Seriously, expect Tommy to move in with Sheed by December.
  • Rated R.  The TD Banknorth Garden will officially designated the first 5 rows of the game “Rated R.”  Those under 17 must be accompanied by a parent and/or legal guardian.
  • LeBron signs.  After the season, expect LeBron to sign a 2 year deal at the veteran minimum.  Jokes on you Donnie Walsh.

It’s going to be the best season Celtics fans have witnessed in decades.  Truly, grab some popcorn, some earmuffs for the kids, and enjoy the show.

I started this bandwagon.

what are the chances we could sign shawn marion to an affordable 2 year deal?

his defensive versatility and 3 pt shooting would be the perfect compliment to the big three.

maybe the chance at a championship would be enough to get him to sign on.

I know Marion has the "malcontent" label on him, but I think he'd be good in Boston.  He's had to put up with huge egos (Amare, Wade) and I really don't think he'd mind playing with 3 unselfish future HoF'ers.

That said, can we get him on the cheap?  I doubt it.

He and Sheed would be good fits in our system, though.
God bless and good night!

Nice post.

I'm on board (and I wasn't), but he's ours now so I'm all for it.

I will say that I too have smelled something special for this season from the time it became clear KG wasn't going to be around for the playoffs.  I think this group has something to prove again.

Here's hoping for good health..It'll be a fine year for Laker slaying!
Yup

I think to give a nick name like this is downplay Rondo and Perk. Rondo especially, I believe by the end of the season he could have the best statistics of all the Celtics. What's the record for assists a game for the season?
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I was on there pretty early, too.   Gotta find some of my old posts, but I was proposing 'Sheed as a perfect fit back before the trade deadline (when there was some speculation he might get bought out).

Maybe I wasn't first, but I'm riding shotgun!

February 25th:

Quote from: me
You know who I think we sign this summer?

'Sheed.

First of all, very few players are getting more than the MLE this year.  Teams under the cap are almost exclusively teams that are having trouble selling tickets.  Everyone's hurting BAD because of the economy.  Salary caps and luxury tax limits are shrinking - plus, EVERYONE is gearing up for the summer of 2010.

'Sheed doesn't sell tickets.  He's had a bad year.  He's not someone you rebuild around.

But, he can play center.  He's got range.  He's buddy-buddy with KG.  He wants to be in a winning environment.  Detroit, I think, is going to let him walk.  And, I think he's got a good chance of getting hooked up to the Rejuvination Machine.  Put him in a frontcourt rotation with KG, with Perk to help with the dirty work, and with either BBD or (hopefully) Powe?  That's a helluva frontcourt, and he won't have to play 35 minutes a night.  Start him or have him come off the bench, but 25-30 minutes a night.

Helps take some physical pressure off KG.

And, I don't see him getting offers much greater than three years at the full MLE.  That seems to me to be about right for a guy of his skill level, at this stage of his career, in this macro environment.

THAT'S who we're targetting over the summer.  Joe Smith, he'll be a LLE guy; you'd like him, but he's not going to really get paid this summer, either.

The funny thing is that Perk is probably more valuable for our team than Ray, but he gets no credit. Our top 6 are all top 5 at their respective positions in the NBA.

I don`t gain anything from rooting against Wallace.
I`m not happy with the signing, but now that he`s on board...

Go Sheed!

(No, seriously, just go... :P)
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.
