Celtics Coast Past Jazz

ORLANDO -- It was the kind of performance Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and head coach Doc Rivers would expect from the Boston Celtics’ pool of young talent.

Highlighted by exceptional team chemistry and hustle, the Celtics stormed past the Utah Jazz, 87-56, on Monday at the 2009 Orlando Pro Summer League.

Lester Hudson, the 58th selection in the 2009 NBA Draft who is the only player in NCAA history to register a quadruple-double, posted 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field.

“I just want to play hard on both ends of the floor,” Hudson said. “I just go out there and stop my man from scoring.”

Other standout performers included Gabe Pruitt and Bill Walker, who each earned some minutes this past season for the C’s. Pruitt and Walker combined for 25 points.

Although they couldn’t establish an effective rhythm throughout, the Jazz did feature some of their rising stars. Eric Maynor, for example, who was Utah’s first-round choice last month, collected nine points and four assists in his professional debut.

Maynor became known during his college days at VCU when he buried a game-winning shot against Duke in the NCAA Tournament in 2007. He is expected to serve as a vital backup to Deron Williams in Utah.

College teammates Derrick Brown and Josh Duncan, who together helped Xavier accomplish many extraordinary feats, combined for 21 points for the Jazz.

Boston will clash with the Orlando Magic on Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET, while Utah and New Jersey/Philadelphia will meet at 5 p.m. ET.

Didn't even mention Giddens.  Even though he didn't score a lot of points, I thought he had the best overall game.

Just watched the summer league stream... I was impressed with Giddens (he's very quick with the ball, but out of control @ times)

Walker played well also, but needs to work on his ball handling and quickness. Hudson played within the flow of the game, overall very good.

Gabe didn't let the game come to him. He tried to force it a bit too much, almost seemed like he was trying to get his. In the 4th he played relaxed and looked very well assisting to Fazeckas unloading some 3's???

Overall Giddens, Hudson, Walker, Pruitt and Fazeckas all played well. Giddens was the MVP, he played extremely well!!! JUST SLOW DOWN GIDDENS SLOW DOWN, YOU A BIT TOO QUICK AND OUT OF CONTROL.

I think Hudson can fill the backup PG as well.  Here's what David Thorpe had to say (he's been twittering live from Orlando):

david b. thorpe Lester Hudson is a dynamo on defense

So did Swift play at all? Didn't see any of the game. I would think Danny pushing for big minutes for Swift to see if he's worth keeping around.

  • Rondo = Good
Looking at the box score, Nick Fazekas had a decent game.  50% shooting, nailed three from downtown, and so on.

Hudson is NOT going to replace Gabe, at least not this year.  The guy doesn't play the one.  He has to learn the position.  Plus, you can't have Lester and Eddie on the court at the same time.  They'd be abused defensively.

Hudson can play, but let's be real.  It was one game and many of the guys looked good.  And Doc is not going to play Hudson this season.

What I couldn't believe was how fat Sweetney is.  I was hoping he'd come in, in better shape.  Evidently he's lost weight too. Fazekas looked pretty decent in the second half.  Swift was alright, but nothing exciting.  Rogers looked pretty good as well.

When you win by 30+, it's hard to look bad.
