I agree.  And aside from simply wanting to keep the core together, free agency is another reason I've hated some of the trades that have been proposed over the past week.  Some people have praised some of the trade proposals floating around because they'd give us a backup big man or a backup 2/3.  That's all well and good, but why would we want to break up the core to do that when we can just obtain those things on the FA market? 

Sure, it may not happen, but I think we should at least try first.

Atop my wish list would probably be Antonio McDyess and Grant Hill.  While Dice isn't a classic center, he's probably more equipped to play there than anybody we attempted to trot out there last year to backup Perk.  He also averaged 30 mpg last year, so even if we lost Davis and Powe takes a while to get back, Dice could cover most of the backup minutes at the 4/5 next year (or at the very least, he could do do so come playoff time). 

As for Hill, he's older, but he had a great year last year.  He's a scorer and creator off the bench that would really change the way the game is played with the starters on the bench.  Plus, we could keep House at the "1" and let Hill run the team when House is in the game.

I don't know if the MLE would be enough to cover both, but I can hope. 

I agree, but I do think there is a possibility one or two of our expiring contracts might be used today in a trade (NOT RAYS).

One reason would be that the owners don't want to go deeper into luxury tax territory.  If Ray Allen gets traded for a serviceable starter and a couple of decent bench players, then the rest of the bench could be filled with vet min contracts. 

I think we are kidding ourselves if we believe that the Cs will resign BBD and use the full MLE to fill out the bench.

Jon, I would be fine with your suggestion of splitting the MLE, but, at roughly $5.5M, that means the owners would in a sense be paying $11M to add Dice and Hill.  That's a lot of money, and I can understand why they might balk at that...

True.  I understand that.  However, if we believe Wyc (which as the poster above me says, some people don't), they'll use the full MLE for the right player (or I guess in this case, players).  To me, Hill and Dice are the worth it, as they satisfy pretty much every need we have. 

I'm also curious how much more the C's stand to make in revenue from a season where they win it all and a season where they lose in the second round or conference finals.  That might motivate Wyc to open his wallet.

Honestly, I'd be OK with letting BBD walk.  The C's true need is someone who can play some backup center; Baby doesn't do that.  Furthermore, I feel like Powe and Baby aren't all that far off talentwise.  If the C's could bring in someone like Dice that could backup Perk, I think we could survive come playoff time with Powe getting the 10-12 mpg backing up KG instead of Davis.  I also don't feel like Davis is ever going to be a starter on a contender.  So I don't think we're going to be looking back 5 years from now kicking ourselves for letting him go. 

Personally, I'd be thrilled if next year come playoff time we had a rotation that looked like this:

C - Perkins/McDyess
PF - Garnett/McDyess (maybe spot minutes for Powe)
SF - Pierce/Hill
SG - Allen/Hill (maybe spot minutes for Walker or House)
PG - Rondo/House

Of course in the regular season we'd expand the rotation more to rest everyone; however, come playoff time, I don't see how a rotation like that would have us miss Baby. 

The real question then becomes whether we could convince Dice and Hill to split the MLE.  I have my doubts, but they might do it if they're truly interested in winning a title.

Funny he did pretty good at it if you look at the statistics. Also in 2007-2008 when we won the title he filled that role pretty well.
