Because Detroit is now looking to rebuild and he might want to win a title.

Surely he is questioning himself about his decision to return to Detroit last year.  Could he have gotten us further last year with KG out?  Who knows?

However, if he wants to win a title he has to know we are a prime destination and he'd fit in perfectly in a role that is custom built for his skill set.

Here's a more recent quote from McDyess on his future:

Detroit remains an option, but the team’s struggles may lead to McDyess choose to play elsewhere.

“I hate to sell myself short of anything at this point in my career,” McDyess said. “So I have to keep all my options open.”

[…] “I just have to see how everything is going to go in the summer with this team, and kind of go from there,” McDyess said. “But like I said, it’s flattering that there are some teams that still think I can help them win. I definitely feel I have some options.”

Now, that quote is from late February so he may have changed his mind again.  However, to me it looks like he'll be pursuing other opportunities.

I second your skepticism, his reasons for not signing here last year seemed pretty concrete: his family is rooted in Det, he is loyal to the city, and he's publicly stated he's not a ring chaser.  Maybe he's changed his mind, but Det was a mess last year when he refused to sign elsewhere.

Sheed is no slouch at the same position, he's good for the game, he would bring his own unique skill set to the position, and he's great friends with Garnett.  I know many here have taken his agent's 10mil comments to heart, but I can see him as a much more likely candidate to take a discount here.  He'll win a ring, play with his friend (last time he did this he won a championship), and it would increase his value around the league for 1 final signing.

I think when he looked around at the end of the CLEV series and realized he was the only piston who cared one way or the other about the series and was still playing hard did alot to change his views.

I feel as if it is very likely that McDyess will come here this summer. He wanted to return to Detroit because he still viewed them as a contender and was entrenched in the Boston/Detroit rivalry. I think Danny coached him at one time in Phoenix. I could be wrong.

Fact is there isn't anyone that knows for sure what McDyess is going to do. We can all speculate based on what we think he is thinking but most of that is conjecture based primarily in the way we would see the world and not necessarily how he would see the world.

It is entirely possible that Antonio McDyess looks at basketball as a means to make a living and that he loves where he is location-wise in the country. His family and its solid standing in his community might be a lot more important to him than packing up his family to chase a title.

Maybe many others in Detroit gave up in the playoffs but he didn't. Just because when he goes out on the floor he never gives up, that doesn't mean he's all about trying to get a title. He simply could be an individual that has pride in everything he does and will give 110% all the time regardless of the outcome.

I just think that until he comes out and says something about his situation that is different from what we have heard, we need to base what he is going to do on his past words and actions. he could have gone anywhere last year. He could have stayed in Denver. He could have gone to Cleveland, which isn't that far from Detroit, relatively speaking. He could have come to Boston or gone to San Antonio. But he returned to Detroit because that's where his home and heart is and that I think speaks volumes until such time as he signs elsewhere or says he's willing to uproot his family.
