Two things

There are a lot of good PF free agents this year on the market.  Sheed, Boozer "most likely", Odom, Joe Smith, Anderson Varajo "player option", Chris Anderson, Antonio Mcdyess, Chris Wilcox, Stro Swift, Marion, Drew Gooden.  All of these guys are unrestricted free agents.

The economy is in the tank, the salary cap is going down next year and a more teams will be playing the luxury tax.  After reviewing the list above and who will end up where.  No one is paying baby more than 3yrs $12mm.  My best guess is that he shops around and stays with the Celtics for 3yrs $10mm or 2yrs $7mm.  He might take a small paycut to stay with this team.

The majority of the names you have there are irrelevant because they are 1) staying put, 2) Commanding above the MLE, or 3) Going to cost the MLE.

That leaves Joe Smith, Chris Anderson, Antonio Mcdyess, Chris Wilcox, Stro Swift and 16 other "09" playoff teams with 5 Million plus to spend on making their team stronger.

The Celtics will look to address the backup 4 spot without using the MLE because they are in perfect position to do so.

SO paint the picture for me. Who do they sign to replace baby and how much money will they have for other needs? And don't tell me you can bring one of these players you mentioned in for the LLE.... not happening.

The only thing I would add to your list is that I'd rank Baby (at playoff production + starters minutes) above Wilcox and swift right now. Also, if its a young team that is looking for a big (but not so tall) that can spread the floor...I'd rank him above Smith, Varejao, Anderson and Gooden. Marion is more of a 3 than a 4 (despite his production in Phoenix), and on top of that Sheed has said he won't play for less than 8 million per season. McDyess almost retired once when he wasn't going back to Detroit.

All things considered, for a team a year or two away looking for Baby's skill set, I think he'll be able to find 4 million per without a problem.

As a starter -- rebounding per minute

• Andrea Bargnani -- Overall, 5.9rpg in 34.6mpg. Bargnani pulls down a rebound every 5.86 minutes.
• Glen Davis in regular season -- Overall, 5.6rpg in 33.1mpg. BBD pulls down a rebound every 5.91 minutes.
• Glen Davis in playoffs -- 6.1rpg in 37.8mpg. One rebound every 6.2 minutes.

He's still not good enough to be a starter on a contender, or a 6th man. Granted he has filled in admirably for KG, holding his own. However he is not a plus at his position as a starter. He's got those major flaws: short frame, short wingspan, poor rebounding numbers...

If someone is willing to overpay him with 6thman money ($5+ per), more power to him and them, and so long, good luck.

The only thing I would add to this, is if a team is willing to give Davis more than the C's are willing to offer, that the C's really need to try to work out a sign and trade.  Without Davis, it leaves them with way too many holes to fill with just the MLE, LLE, and vet minimum deals.

There's a stinger. A young team that is building should stay away from players like Baby. Otherwise a team slides down the New York Knicks slope of signing role players to the MLE every year, destroying their cap, keeping them in the 30-40 win range year after year.

Young teams should focus on getting real star potential building blocks and cheap role players. When they are on the verge of actually contending for a title, thats when they should sign 1 or 2 higher priced specialist role players.

Very few young teams should view Baby as a building block. Very few contenders should see him as better than what they already have.

Agreed. We could add an expiring contract to make the numbers work. Otherwise Davis is a very important piece on this team. I hope we keep him.

Wow is right.  Hope it isn't us because BBD is not worth it.  Not at all.

It'll be very interesting to see what RFA get with the summer of 10 coming up and also the impending restructuring of the CBA in 11.  Also, with his history of weight issues, I think he is going to find it a tougher market than he and his agent might expect.  That being said Chris Wallace is still the GM of a team, and as we all know Anything is Possible.  I think he might be worth the full mid but I don't know if he would be worth that to us.  Even with an incredible support structure in Boston and the fear of KG berating him and potentially murdering him if he comes in out of shape, Glen hasn't looked in great shape yet.  By knowing the natural way of things, the metabolic rate certainly doesn't increase as we age, so BB is going to have to have some serious lifestyle changes if he wants to remain a healthy and productive member of the league.  God I love him though.
